Andersens Fairy Tales | Hans Christian Andersen

Hans Christian Andersen often referred to in Scandinavia as H. C. Andersen; was a Danish author. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his stories, called eventyr in Danish or "fairy-tales" in English, express themes that transcend age and nationality. Andersen's fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages, have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness, readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well.[2] Some of his most famous fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Little Mermaid", "The Nightingale", "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling", and many more. His stories have inspired ballets, both animated and live-action films, and plays.

This book was one of my favourite when I was a child 🥰
It belonged to my parents first, so I'm very fond to it ☺
I truly love Andersen's works (most of them), plus the illustrations are wonderful!

#riotgrams day three: fairytales. Picked this up at a charity book sale earlier this year. I love the creepy non-Disney-fied versions. AKA the originals.

#CoolBooks #forest

"Far down in the forest, where the warm sun and the fresh air made a sweet resting place, grew a pretty little Fir tree. And yet it was not so happy--it wished so much to be tall like its companions, the pines and firs which grew around it." ???

There are forests mentioned throughout Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales. I went with The Fir Tree?who spent too much time being discontented to enjoy his time in the forest.

hgrimes I just posted some pictures today from the same edition! The illustrations are so beautiful. (also, weird!) 6y
DebinHawaii @hgrimes Hah! Very cool--beautiful and also weird is a great description! 🤣 6y
SqueakyChu This was perhaps my most loved book when I was a child. I kept it until all the pages came out of their binding, and only rubber bands kept my book together. (edited) 6y

#CoolBooks #woods

"If one went on walking, one came to beautiful woods with lofty trees and deep lakes. The wood extended to the sea, which was deep and blue, deep enough for large ships to sail up right under the branches of the trees. Among these trees lived a nightingale, which sang so deliciously that even poor fisherman, who had plenty of other things to do, lay still to listen to it when he was out at night drawing in his nets. ...

DebinHawaii ... The nightingale lives in the woods in this fairy tale and says that his song sounds "best among the trees"--even though the emperor wants him at the palace. My book of Andersen's Fairy Tales shows him in the palace (left side pics) so I found some illustrations of the nightingale in the woods online. (edited) 6y
ReadZenRites Lovely quote and illustrations. I remember the one on the top left from my childhood....Looking at it now, I can see that the throne is claw-footed, but as a child I thought those were the Emperor‘s really wide legs— that he was out of proportion or else depicted as gigantic for some reason. 😂 I‘m so glad to get to see this as an adult and correct myself! 😁 What a strange thing to remember! I think I also remember not liking the Emperor. 6y
Linsy That just transported me!!! Thanks for taking me away ... 💚💚💚 6y

#QuotsyJune18 #duck ?

The only duck-ish quote I could think of off-hand.

"It does not matter in the least having been born in a duckyard if only you come out of a swan's egg!"

Images from Disney.?

Richryan52 Any interest in taking part in a blog tour for my upcoming Holmes book, The Druid of Destiny? A few Irish dishes mentioned in book. 6y
DebinHawaii @Richryan52 Mahalo for thinking of me. I'm afraid I overbooked tours into fall with my regular book tour coordinators and I'm doing one a week which is my normal maximum, plus a few extras I squeezed in. I just can't do any more. I wish you much success with your tour though! 👍 6y

I think I've run out of books with #mermaids to post, so I'm going with the author of "The Little Mermaid" today. (Even though this collection doesn't actually include that story...) #WhatAWayToLive #PiratesLife

CrowCAH It's so neat to read the original fairy tale and compare it to what Disney created. For this one much was altered. 7y

End papers from a very old copy of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales. I think my mom picked this up from a garage sale when I was a baby. As a child, I always loved these end papers (though I didn't know that's what they were called). #endpapers #readjanuary

#booktober #day17 #shortstories I'm not much of a reader of short stories, I like big books and I cannot lie! Short stories usually leave me feeling unfulfilled, I always want more. Stephen King is the only modern writer I've found so far who can pull off a decent short story, and of course Hans Cristian Anderson & The Grimm Bros were the masters of short stories & tales.

Texreader I agree. I'm not a short story girl either but did enjoy Stephen Kings short stories. 8y

#funfridayphoto The Girl who Trod on a Loaf "Great, fat, sprawling spiders spun webs of a thousand years round and round their feet" This story both delighted and terrified me as a child.
