The Extraordinaries
The Extraordinaries | T J Klune
8 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
In Nova City, there are extraordinary people, capable of feats that defy the imagination. Shadow Star protects the city and manipulates darkness, and Pyro Storm is determined to bring the city to its knees using his power over fire. And then there's Nick who . . . well, being the most popular fanfiction writer in the Extraordinaries fandom is a superpower, right? Instead of fighting crime, Nick contends with a new year at school, a father who doesn't trust him, and a best friend named Seth, who may or may not be the love of Nick's short, uneventful life. It should be enough. But after a chance encounter with Shadow Star, Nova City's mightiest hero (and Nick's biggest crush), Nick sets out to make himself extraordinary. And he'll do it with or without Seth's reluctant help . . . Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl meets Brandon Sanderson's Steelheart in TJ Klune's YA debut: a queer coming-of-age story about a fanboy with ADHD and the heroes he loves.

Nick Bell, a 16yo with ADHD, has a big crush on and writes fanfic about the local superhero, Shadow Star.

There were some definite eye-rolling moments with what felt like didactic tick-box inclusion of identities rather than actual characters but also some very funny moments and everything can be forgiven because the reader ends up rooting for the adorable central character, Nick. 👎

rwmg The last quarter after the not totally unexpected big reveal is an exciting superhero/supervillain battle. I had already decided to continue with the series when the post-credit scene hooked me in even further. 13mo

I REALLY like TJ Klune. I‘ve only experienced the audiobooks (which are incredible) so was intrigued how I‘d like this on paper. I laughed so hard that I almost could not breathe. Set in a world with superheroes, of a boy who wishes he was one (primarily because of a giant crush he has on one of them). His increasingly misguided attempts to gain powers are baffling and hilarious and his relationship with his dad got me in the feels. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

For fans of fanfiction themed stories. Set in a world where superheroes (Extraordinaries) coexist with regular folk, gay teen Nick who suffers from ADHD harbors feeling for his best friend and writing fanfics about his superhero crush Shadow Star. Filled with inside jokes, predictable tropes, YA romance cliches, and comic book action, this was an okay but enjoyable read for me.

Littens, this book is every bit as wonderful as I expected it to be! Klune‘s YA debut is every bit as magical as The House in the Cerulean Sea. A third of the way through & I‘m reading this thing with a big smile on my face & lots of laughter. If I cry before the end, I won‘t be surprised. Klune writes books filled with love, compassion, exuberance, & humor. I think this book cements Klune as an automatic buy for me. Now to keep reading...
