Futureland
Futureland: Nine Stories of an Imminent World | Walter Mosley
4 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
The citizenry of America struggles for survival in a dangerous, twisted future In “Whispers in the Dark,” an ex-con sells his organs to ensure his brilliant nephew’s future. The boy will grow up to have the highest IQ ever recorded, but the uncle, who sold his eyes, won’t be able to see it. In “Voices,” a history professor becomes addicted to a drug called pulse, which gives him access to a world of vivid fantasy while tearing his brain to shreds. By the time the professor qualifies for a brain transplant, he’s no longer sure what’s real and what’s imagined. And in “Angel’s Island,” a convict in the world’s largest private prison reveals the facility’s chilling secrets. In this critically acclaimed collection of stories, noir legend Walter Mosley takes his unique vision of American society into the future. As the nation descends into chaos, its citizens wonder, Is the world ending, or has the apocalypse already come and gone?

This collection of short stories isn't really working for me and I can't figure out why...

Pickpick

I would definitely recommend this collection of related short stories BUT there were themes and archetypes used I was not cool with. I saw someone post on here they had never seen an author do both short story AND novels well. I want to test this by reading a novel Mosley is famous for for comparison. I have a sneaky feeling that his novels are more compelling to me.

GuiltyFeat I've read 20-some books by Mosley (though not Futureland). His series books are terrific - Easy Rawlins, Fearless Jones - and I've only read one major dud which was Blue Light. He has another series character who appears in collections of connected short stories which are some of his best work. I recommend checking out Socrates Fortlow in 8y
ultrabookgeek Thanks! I will read that one first - I appreciate the feedback. 8y
