4 posts | 3 read
BSFA Award-winning author Gareth L. Powell delivers an explosive conclusion to his epic Embers of War trilogy. Low on fuel and hunted by the Fleet of Knives, the sentient warship Trouble Dog follows a series of clues that lead her to the Intrusion--an area of space where reality itself becomes unstable. But with human civilisation crumbling, what difference can one battered old ship have against an invincible armada? Meanwhile, Cordelia Pa and her step-brother eke out their existence salvaging artefacts from an alien city. But when Cordelia starts hearing the city's song in her head, strange things start happening around her. What extraordinary affinity does she have for this abandoned technology, and how can it possibly help the Trouble Dog? Award-winning author Gareth L. Powell delivers an explosive conclusion to his epic Embers of War trilogy.

I was disappointed in the ending of the trilogy. I thought it was rushed and didn't have the same feel as the other two books. But I'm glad I did finish the trilogy.

Pickpick

61/150 While the conclusion was a tad bit deus ex machina, it was still a stirring finale to the Embers of War trilogy. No one is safe in this book, as characters you've come to know die in both heroic and tragic ways. I was sad when this was over, I want more adventures of the Trouble Dog and her crew. Powell will be added to my list of auto buy authors. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

It's a gloomy, rainy weekend, perfect for staying inside and reading. I have my usual selection of print, ebook and audiobook to chose from. I should finish at least one of these by Sunday.

Worst of the trilogy - glad to be done with this series.

Begins with a clumsy recap then switches to a lengthy YAish character introduction segment (did the author combine two book ideas?).

There's a tiny bit more world building info here, but it's all very disconnected from the plot or character actions. Intergalatic empires with AI spaceship is a stock setting - numerous other authors make it work. But this seems paper thin.

Settings Been reviewing novels pretty harshly recently. Think it's because Red Chambers is so good I have a new comparison benchmark. -_- 4y
