I'll Be Your Mirror: The Collected Lyrics | Lou Reed
11 posts | 1 read
Out of print for several years, a comprehensive volume of Lou Reed's lyrics with brand new introductions, now updated in a new text design to include the lyrics from his final album with Metallica, Lulu. Through his many incarnations-from proto punk to glam rocker to elder statesman of the avant garde Lou Reed's work has maintained an undeniable vividness and raw beauty, fueled by precise character studies and rendered with an admirable shot of moral ambiguity. Beginning with his formative days in the Velvet Underground and continuing through his remarkable solo albums like Transformer, Berlin, and New York,Doin' The Things We Want To is crucial to an appreciation of Lou Reed, not only as a consummate underground musician, but as one of the truly significant visionary lyricists of the rock n' roll era. Containing a body of work that spans more than six decades and facsimile pages from late career lyrics, this is a monument to the literary qualities of an American original.

Life's like forever becoming
But life's forever dealing in hurt
Now life's like death without living
That's what life's like without you
...
What good are these thoughts that I'm thinking
It must be better not to be thinking at all
A styrofoam lover with emotions of concrete
No not much, not much at all
...
What's good?
What's good?
Not much at all
Life's good-
But not fair at all

Pickpick

I read Lou's lyrics like poetry, because that's what they are: touching, affecting, harrowing, sardonic poems. He has some "Yeah, Baby!" lyrics, of course, but mostly he poured himself into his compositions with a brutally beautiful honesty. ??

Bookwomble I read them through while listening to Lou's albums, which deepened my appreciation. I know most of his words by rote, they usually come out of me without thinking, but sitting mindfully with his thoughts and feelings, embedded in his music, was a more intense experience.

The myriad choices of his fate set themselves out upon
A plate for him to choose what had he to lose
Not a ghost-bloodied country all covered with sleep
Where the black angel did weep
Not an old city street in the east
Gone to choose
& wandering's brother walked on through the night
With his hair
In his face
Long a long splintered cut from the knife of GT
The Rally Man's patter ran on through the dawn
Until we said so long to his skull
Shrill yell

"They say the president's dead
No one can find his head
It's been missing now for weeks
But no one noticed it
He had seemed so fit
And I'm sick of it
I'm sick of you
Bye bye bye"

Bookwomble From Lou's song, "I'm Sick of You" from the 1989 album "New York". Prescient, though it's not actually about the current POTUS. Still, Donald does get a couple of lines in the same song: "They ordained the Trumps and then he got the mumps / And died being treated at Mount Sinai". 3y

Are better than others...

And some kinds of love
The possibilities are endless
And for me to miss one
Would seem to be groundless."

@Trashcanman I'm holding you at least partly responsible for this impulse buy George! ? Your profile tagline from the Velvet Underground's "Oh, Sweet Nuthin'" had me humming Lou Reed songs all afternoon, then I saw this when I went to the bookshop, and opened it at random to "Temptation Inside Your Heart", and was unable to resist!

Trashcanman Ha! I didn't know I'm such an influencer hehehe. I love The Velvet Underground! I hope it's a good read. 4y
Bookwomble @Trashcanman You don't know your own powers! 😆 It is good reading. Lou studied poetry at college and his lyrics show it. It does mean that the gaps in my LR music collection will now have to be filled, though 😄 4y
