Our Lady of the Night | Mayra Santos-Febres
8 posts | 2 read | 8 to read
The epic story of the complex, sensual, tragic, and remarkable life of a legendary Puerto Rican madam Born into poverty and then abandoned by her mother, Isabel "La Negra" Luberza blossoms into a supremely sensual young woman. Obsessed with attaining aristocratic status—armed with incredible physical presence, indomitable ambition, and keen intelligence—she meets Fernando Fornarís, the man who will forever change her life. With a parcel of land given to her by her rich, white married lover, Isabel transforms herself into a hard-edged and merciless businesswoman—abandoning her own newborn son to become Puerto Rico's most feared and respected madam, a collector of society's secrets, a queen of the notorious brothel that emerges as the island's true political and economic heart. Set against the rich backdrop of the Caribbean and the United States during the tumultuous years of World War II, Mayra Santos-Febres's Our Lady of the Night is a breathtaking novel of passion, power, and the devastating price of achieving everything one wishes for.

Pickpick

The blurbs say that this is about a woman who rose from poverty to become a wealthy and powerful madame. And it is, sort of. But it is really about how close each of us is to becoming unmoored, and what hat looks like, and how it plays out over two generations of a diverse, loosely connected group of people. Shifting in time and POV without explicit notations, it can take several chapters to acclimate yourself. Don‘t give up. 5🌟

I‘m about halfway through this book set in Puerto Rico. It‘s an atmospheric story and it takes awhile to orient yourself in the changing points of view but it is worth the effort. Thanks for recommending it @BookishMarginalia and @WanderingBookaneer ! #litsypassport #puertoRico @maximoffs

Emilymdxn I love that cover! The book sounds super interesting. Stacked 💛 6y

Mehso-so

I went from disliking this book, to liking it, to just wishing it would end. I almost got the impression the author was of the same opinion, the ending was so weirdly rushed. My biggest problems with this book: the artsy and confusing writing (both timeline and dialogue), the completely uninteresting chapters about the eternal Dona Montse that served no discernible purpose and the messy structure. First and last from this author! #passportlitsy

Both books I‘m currently reading mention chocolate malts, and it‘s the first time I‘ve heard of such a thing!

britt_brooke I think it‘s the same as a milkshake. I‘ve heard this term but never used it. Feels like it may be a regional thing. 6y
Chrissyreadit Yum! I loved malts when I was a kid. Malt powder is added to the shake. They are so good! I haven‘t had one in years though. 6y
Zelma @britt_brooke it‘s a shake with malt powder. If you have ever had a Whopper (candy) or malted milk ball, you know the flavor. Mr. Z is a vanilla malt fanatic. 6y
britt_brooke @Zelma Yum, that sounds good! 6y

I‘ve been having a hard time with this book. The writing feels overly complicated and artificial, but I think I‘m getting used to it. I hope the second part will be more captivating, it‘s sooo difficult to tear myself away from the sewing machine to read a book I‘m just meh about. #passportlitsy (Puerto Rico)

I'm about 70 pages in and I'm having a hard time focusing on the two timelines in this novel. I'm pretty sure it's bc I'm visiting family and reading pretty sporadically. I might have to try this again when I get home. Any one else need to be in the right mood for some novels?

Gleefulreader Absolutely. Sometimes the topic doesn't work because I've had too many heavy books back to back for example. And it is hard to read dense books at my MIL's because there is often a lot of interruptions. But often I can come back to them later! 8y
