City of Night
City of Night: A Novel of the House War | Michelle West
4 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
THe Hosue War is the story of the battle for control of the most powerful of the ruling Houses in the Essalieyan Empire -- House Terafin. But it is also the tale of Jewel Markess. Rescued from her precarious existence as an orphan in the slums of the capital city, Averalaan, by Rath -- a recluse whose family is powerful within House Terafin -- Jewel is gathering together children less fortunate than herself, creating her own den. But now times are truly desperate within Averalaan's hundred holdings. Street children are disappearing, theft and violence are increasing, and even Jewel's den is finding it hard to make ends meet. They've been living on their own for some time, but Rath is still their mentor and continues to sell items they find in the ancient undercity hidden beneath the streets of Averalaan. Then suddenly, Rath orders them to avoid the undercity. Yet Rath himself refuses to heed the warnings of Jewel's seer dreams. Instead, he allies with the mages of the Order of Knowledge in a secret war against demonic foes, knowing he'll be targeted for death -- or worse. In a last attempt to protect Jewel and her den-kin, he provides a note of introduction to the head of House Terafin -- Rath's sister, whom he'd sworn never to contact. For only withing the well-guarded Terafin manse will the den stand any chance of escaping the unnatural forces reaching out to claim them.... From the Paperback edition.

Annnnnd I had basically no reading time today, so here I am, trying to finish the last 60 pages of CITY OF NIGHT before I fall asleep.

I‘m loving the book, but I‘ve been reading it for WAY too long. I‘m past ready to start something else. I see y‘all post about how much you love to read slowly and “savour,” but that ain‘t me. I‘m a relisher, not a savourer, and I wish I‘d had the proper space to relish CITY OF NIGHT as it deserves.

I had paczek #2 for breakfast. It‘s mighty nice to find a doughnut-type-thing with a decent amount of filling. Tim Hortons should be ashamed of how little they put in theirs.

My breakfast reading took me to about 80 pages from the end of CITY OF NIGHT, so I should finish it today! Hurray! I‘ve reached the point where it overlaps with the beginning of HUNTER‘S OATH, and it‘s been interesting to get those events from other angles.

Geenie That looks sooo good 🤤 and your book too😍 4y

I read a bit more of CITY OF NIGHT while I ate my first-ever paczek to fortify me for an afternoon of baking. I‘m loving the book, but I‘ve had way too little reading time this week and I wasted way too much of it wading through THE LAST WISH. With any luck, I‘ll be able to really dig in after my baking session and finish it up tomorrow.

#weeklyforecast time.

I lucked into an Express copy of THE LAST WISH, so that‘s my short fiction sorted.

I plan to focus on CITY OF NIGHT by Michelle West. If I finish it, or if I need a break, I‘ll start FIFTH QUARTER by Tanya Huff.

I‘ve gotta finish BLACK WRITERS MATTER as it‘s due soon and I can‘t renew it.

I‘ll take another stab at my small comics stack.

And I‘ll push on through the Sagas, because I‘m stubborn.
