The Darkness Of Wallis Simpson
The Darkness Of Wallis Simpson | Rose Tremain
8 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
From the author of The Gustav Sonata Wallis Simpson, the twice-divorced American woman for whom Edward Vlll abdicated in 1936, ended her life as the prisoner of her lawyer who would not allow anyone - friend, foe or journalist - to visit her in her Paris flat. Rose Tremain takes this true story and transforms it into an imaginative and ironic fiction. Her thesis is that Wallis, gaga and bed-ridden, has forgotten the king who gave up an empire for love of her. The other stories in this magnificent collection range over a variety of themes, equally original and unexpected. An East German border guard, redundant after the Berlin Wall comes down in 1989, imagines that he might still have a purpose in life: he tries to reach Russia by bicycling across the hostile wastes of Poland. A jilted man gets his revenge. A baby grows wings. A character in an Impressionist painting escapes from his 'frame' - or does he? And there's a Christmas story set in a seedy hotel... #LitsyWalkers A gorgeous Sunday evening walk after yin yoga class to work off the bottle of wine I helped to drink at lunch. This is a bizarre audio book but I enjoy it.

Kaye Gorgeous ! You‘re so lucky to have so many beautiful views. 5y

This is the creek I walk along on the way to school everyday. I only get under 10 minutes of audio walking in provided I don‘t get interrupted by all the elderly people that walk the same track. #LitsyWalkers @kaye (Happy birthday) @DarcysMom

Kaye Pretty scenery. Thanks for the birthday wishes. 💖 5y

My pilates class was cancelled this afternoon so I went for a walk up to Shepherd‘s Hill and listened to another average story in this tagged book. It was a bit depressing but I could just be in a mood. Some good one liners though #Litsywalkers @kaye @DarcysMom

DarcysMom What is that building? It is a little menacing. 5y
julesG @DarcysMom Local school? 😝 5y

The 3rd story in this audio book is the worst so far but still interesting to hear what the female author thinks goes on inside the brain of a middle age man. Today I‘m excited to step back in time and listen to Double J an Australian alternative radio station replay the Hottest 100 of 1998. The year I left high school! It‘s my last day of school holidays before I go back to teach Special Education at High School. I plan to pack a lot into my day.

MrsMalaprop I really like Tremain but haven‘t read her for years. Enjoy your last day of hols with the Hottest 100 1998 😁. That was the year I bought my first house - loved my Hottest 100s too. I‘m back to work in education (as a school psych) next week too. 😏 5y
LapReader Can you recommend any other Tremains @MrsMalaprop ? Good luck next week. 5y

Another 30 minute walk this morning and another story started from my tagged library audio book. Just having a stretch and cup of chai tea now before I do some meal prep, #JB mailing and Litsy Swap posting today. Looks like it‘s going to be overcast 😭 #litsywalkers @kaye @DarcysMom

Kaye Oh my gosh. Look at your views. Beautiful. 🌷 5y
DarcysMom What a lovely place to walk. 5y
catebutler What a fabulous view! Your day sounded perfect to me. I love the little moments and pleasures like a cup of tea, during the day. 5y

Just back from my 5km walk. I finished the 1st story in the tagged book today. The narrator does a fantastic job with the voices. The story was quirky and I will definitely search for more of her work. Currently I‘m stretching with a T2 New York breakfast & into the #winterstormreadathon even though it‘s only overcast here today. I‘m falling in ❤️ with The Great Alone which I didn‘t think would happen perhaps I will read more of Hannah‘s work.

DarcysMom Looks like a great spot for a walk! 5y
Kaye Good job. It‘s interesting seeing your pics from over there 😊 5y

I have been resting in the country but now I am back home and the internet actually works I can download some audio books. I walked for a half hour this morning, listening to the tagged book now I am stretching. This is a picture of a local swimming hole built by convicts that is just up the road from my place. #litsywalkers @kaye

Kaye Great start 👟🌟🎧. Pretty photo. Did the convicts get to swim in it since it has a fence around it ? 5y
LapReader @Kaye I bet they wish they could have. I think it was made for the use of one man in charge. 5y
Kaye He must be rich if he could have his own private swimming area built, even though they were probably free labor. He‘d have to buy that chunk of land/ water ? Wouldn‘t he ? Does he use it ? 5y

LapReader Land was often given as a reward in Oz. Labor was their sentence. Anyone can swim there nowadays. It often needs repairs as it is so ancient @Kaye 5y
