Alright; I‘m finally doing it! I‘m finally diving into House of Earth and Blood for the first time after staring at it for over a year in preparation for the very close release of the second book, House of Sky and Breath; now to see if I can finish this in time💙🙌🏼📖 #chunkster #currentread

This has a lot to recommend it, including great characters, a large variety of meaty relationships, some intense action sequences, and a cool setting. I loveloveLOVED about 300 of its 800 pages, and in the end that was enough to let me love it overall.

That said, it‘s HEAVILY padded. I get the sense Maas loves her characters and their world so much that she wants to tell the reader EVERYTHING about them. The story would‘ve flowed much better ⬇️

xicanti if she‘d let herself imply most of the details instead of indulging her urge to infodump (and to repeat certain bits over and over). #NewYearWhoDis 3w
Laughterhp I‘m glad you liked this one overall! I definitely don‘t disagree with anything you said. 3w
xicanti @Laughterhp I did put my name down for the next book before I‘d even finished this one! 3w

In case I haven‘t made it clear by now, I sometimes have uneven reactions to Maas‘s books—but I consistently love how she thanks her dog all her acknowledgments. Dogs are super important.

(Oh, and I had an unexpected block of free time this afternoon, so I DID finish the book. Full review coming soon.) #NewYearWhoDis

I probably won‘t finish HOEAB today, but I‘m on track for tomorrow! It‘s weird; y‘all know I‘ve struggled with some aspects of it, but there were about 150 pages where I was absolutely in book-love. Alas, I‘m now back in regular old book-like, with the strong feeling this would‘ve been a fabulous 350-pager.

Also of note: I keep picturing Syrinx as Casey with a lion‘s tail, pointy ears, and a more obviously Pekingese face.

I‘m far enough into HOUSE OF EARTH AND BLOOD that I‘m invested in the story and the characters have grown on me, but y‘all? I really think this is a 350-400 page book trapped inside an 800-page book. I get the sense Maas has reached the popularity threshold where her editors don‘t rein her in as often as they would with a newer author or one with a smaller fanbase. So many infodumps. So much unnecessary repetition. #unpopularopinion #NewYearWhoDis

Laughterhp I‘m sure you aren‘t the only one that feels this way! It definitely didn‘t need to be as long as it did. I think I took a break around page 400 or something. 3w
xicanti @Laughterhp I almost took a break after page 200, but I decided to give it a chapter or two more and it clicked for me from there. 3w
DinoMom I find that issue in all of her series, some of the books can be a lot shorter and be more effective. Dont get me wrong I like her books but sometimes I skip whole sections and do not lose the story because the sections were just to long and do not anything to move the plot or characters forward. 3w
xicanti @DinoMom I love some of her books, but I find her pretty uneven overall. I ended up speed-reading a fair few chunks of A COURT OF SILVER FLAMES because I cared deeply about some aspects of the plot and not at all about others. 3w

This is my second time reading and I love this book. Honestly this book and Bryce has inspired me in so many ways, to feeling better about my weight and curves, to building confidence and finally making some decent friends at university. The book has taught me to cherish every day and love harder than before. To be brave and never let anyone make me feel insufficient. To be badass and look good doing it. And that through love, all is possible❤🌙

StaceGhost I loved this book! It‘s her best imho 3w
Littlewolf1 I love this book so much, and want that jacket. Looking forward to February to get book 2. 3w

I‘m 100 pages into my second #NewYearWhoDis book, and while I think I‘ll like the STORY, I‘m frustrated with all the infodumps. I don‘t remember them being this extreme in Maas‘s earlier books, but maybe that‘s because she had more fish-out-of-water characters before. Here, everyone‘s lived in this world since birth, so there‘s no reason for huge explanations.

xicanti I also wonder if the infodumps account for Maas‘s popularity as a fantasy gateway author. The ideal SFF narrative gets the worldbuilding across via incluing; small details seeded through the text that tell the reader what they need to know. These are easy for the people who‘re used to them to pick up on, but they do seem to grieve a lot of readers who gravitate towards real-world stories and who want thorough explanations for unfamiliar ideas. I trundled out this morning for my last library haul of 2021: Olivia Dade‘s latest and the first two arrivals from @Laughterhp ‘s #NewYearWhoDis list. There‘re a couple more in transit for me, too; something to look forward to in early 2022.

Reread in preparation for next February‘s book 2 ⭐️ enjoyed more 2nd time around, maybe. Knew what I was in for. I definitely felt I needed a Reread to refresh on some of the secondary characters, which SJM has said get a lot more page time in book 2. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Why do bad books get pretty covers? My book club chose UF for our genre this month, and I‘m 164 pages in and want to bang my head against a wall. Will I DNF? Probably not, but will I regret reading all 800 PAGES of this book? Absolutely.

This book. It is gut wrenching and so emotional for me. Not normally much for fantasy, but this is different. Fae, angels, shifters, vampires, merfolk, demons. Jeez. They‘re all here. Can‘t wait for the next one to come out in November!

While this was an easy and fast-paced read, it was just ok for me. The story itself was interesting and had some plot twists at the end. The writing could have been better, though. The lack of steamy scenes was a bit disappointing too, given the sexual tension throughout the 800+ page book. Overall, I think this one is a bit overhyped. #unpopularopinion

O. M. G. This book took me a little while to wrap my head around her world structure, but hot DANG the plot was intense, the plot twists were WILD, and I literally could not put it down until I finished it at 1am. An excellent gripping read, with characters so well written that you cry for them. Would recommend (but only if you‘re ok with mucho profanity and some intense smexy scenes!).

This was sooooo gooooddd. Especially the second half, first half was a little slow but it picked up. Bryce is amazing, so generous and kind but hiding it under her bad girl image. Hunt is such a tormented bad guy but actually good guy. They make a great couple and the end had me nearly in tears. But I‘m soft so don‘t read into that too much!

I want to read the next one as soon as it comes out!!!

I finally read Sarah J Maas's Crescent City and as with her books it is long! This is about Bryce half human and fae. Her bestfriend and the wolf pack are murdered and Bryce feels a lot of guilt . There is of course an angel called Hunt Athalar who is good looking and enslaved to the Archangel. He ends up having to protect Bryce. There is a demon killing people in the city and Bryce and Hunt are tasked to figure out who and why this is happening!

I used to think I didn‘t like the fantasy genre, but then I realized that I just didn‘t like the old school traditional fantasy genre. Give me sassy reluctant protagonists who have absolutely no time for your bullshit, and I love it!

Not to mention Elizabeth Evans is a great narrator. Anybody else have a fave audiobook narrator?

I read this back around Thanksgiving (still catching up on reviews!) and loved it. It wasn't entirely clear what it wanted to be at the beginning, but by the end it was a compelling story with a twist I didn't see coming.

The heroine is one of Maas's tortured characters who does the right thing even while others dismiss her as shallow.

Looking forward to the next in the series! 4.5🌟

This was my 1st Sarah J. Maas book. And I loved it.
To me this is a love story and a story of friendship folded into a dark mystery filled with murder, betrayal, deceit and heartbreak. (Heartbreak for me as the reader and some of the characters as well, real tears were shed).
There is a major plot twist which I personally didn't see coming.
I am looking forward to the next installment in this series.

I love her other books and thought some were a stretch to be in YA. This is her first “adult” book and I couldn‘t read it! She may have set the bar for the %}>{ word being used every 60 words. I love her world building but this book just seems to try to be edgy in the wrong way for my taste. I‘m moving on! DNF!

The biggest book I've ever read, yet it's definitely one of the best books I've ever read. With a slow start but soon picks up, I loved the plot, the plot twists were absolutely unpredictable and I adored the characters, especially the MC Bryce. The romance was written so well, I love how friendships were just as equally important. I enjoyed the way it was written, and the NA aspects of it, which is definitely a change of pace. I need book two now
