My Reading Challenge
My Reading Challenge: Fun Notebook Tracker for Children (8.5"x11" UK English A4) | Chulabula Designs
88 posts | 1 to read
Every year, schools and libraries in the UK (and around the world) encourage children to take part in a reading challenge during their summer holidays. Whether your children are taking part in this challenge or you simply want to encourage them to read more, the "My Reading Challenge" notebook has been designed as a great resource to help children stay excited about their challenge, log and track the books they've read, and show they have understood and thought about what they are reading. This reading-themed journal is a fun activity book where they can write or draw their feelings about each book to share later with their teachers or challenge organisers and their family. The book is perfect for Key Stage 2 (KS2) children but can be used for all primary school children (ages 4-11) with parental help. Questions are generic so they can apply to fiction and non-fiction books, and ample white space means that younger children can draw - rather than write - their answers if they prefer. space for 10 books (challenges often recommend 6 books but extra space has been given for children who want to move beyond that) book log at the beginning of the notebook for children to list the books they have read, in brief book log at the end of the notebook to list books your children want to read, to get them excited about continuing to read beyond the challenge fun, full-colour illustrations with a reading theme - "Look Inside" for design and book questions 8.5"x 11" (approx. A4) workbook with a bright glossy paperback cover to appeal to younger children rating system based on 5 stars This is the UK version of the reading challenge workbook and uses British English spelling - such as "favourite" not "favorite". US English version COMING SOON. Also available in other designs. Please note: paper stock is good quality 100 GSM but we recommend drawings are done in coloured pencils or crayons to avoid bleed.

Here's a look at my original #readyourkindle challenge list, complete with the books I marked off in February. Two blues were READ while the red was, sadly, a DNF. We had a duplicate book number this month, so I've already got one marked off for this month. Woohoo! 😝

In 2023, I joined @Andrew65 and @TheSpineView for the #SeriesLove2023 challenge. I read 24 books from series that I had either already started or wanted to read! 58.5% of my reading! I‘m really glad I joined the challenge and I have no regrets, but nearly all of those books came from the library. That meant I didn‘t read as many books from my shelves. So, I am challenging myself to #clearmyshelvesin2024 and read more books that I already own. ❤️📚

Andrew65 Well done that‘s excellent 👏👏👏

I am aiming to try and do that too, as well as reading some of the bigger books I keep putting off!

Good luck with your reading in 2024.
3mo
Elizabeth2 @Andrew65 yes / I have several longer books I want to get to as well! We have similar goals for 2024! Funny, knowing I‘m going to try to read more from my shelves in 2024 has me wanting to go to the bookstore and buy all the books now before the end of 2023. 😂 Here‘s to a great year of reading in 2024! 3mo
TheSpineView Wow! Great job! 3mo
Andrew65 @Elizabeth2 That‘s one way to go 😂 Hope you have a great year of reading too, I look forward to seeing your progress. 3mo

I'm calling it - the wildflowers are out all over, and I saw a string of wee Australian Shelduck ducklings waddling across the park yesterday, so it's Djilba (first spring). That means it must be time to start the “Fall“ section of my #Booked2023 challenge! I have ideas for most of these.

@BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen @alisiakae

Cinfhen Yay! Go for it 😁 8mo
Lauredhel @Cinfhen we have twice as many Springs and Summers than we do autumn and winter, it makes four-season structures weird 8mo
Bookwormjillk I love the concept of First Spring. Enjoy your books! 8mo
Lauredhel @Bookwormjillk yes six seasons is unfamiliar at first to us, but does fit with the cycles here (though things are shifting a bit with climate change) 8mo

❤️Well. I‘ve been setting a numerical goal for about ten years now, and I usually tweak it at some point during the year.
💜I need to finish five books in ten days to meet this year‘s goal. With what I have on hand, it‘s definitely possible, but I‘ll see how it goes.

Since another month is gone and the year is at the halfway point (what?!?), here‘s my progress on the #ReadingAfrica2022 challenge! In June, I read books for Burkina Faso 🇧🇫, Benin 🇧🇯, Sierra Leone 🇸🇱, the Seychelles 🇸🇨, and South Sudan 🇸🇸. I enjoyed every one of them!

Librarybelle So awesome!! 2y
BarbaraBB How many countries do you have left? I guess you‘re almost done?!?! 2y
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB I have 21 left. So I‘m in great shape but definitely have a fair number still to go! 2y
Hooked_on_books @Itchyfeetreader This is my fourth year (?!?) of similar challenges (first the states, then Europe, then Asia), so I feel like I‘ve learned how to tackle them to make them happen. But regardless of how long they last for each person, I think they‘re such fun challenges! I love learning about the countries as well as a little geography. 2y
BarbaraBB I completely agree. The fun is literally in the journey not the end goal. I have learned so much too thanks to the challenges and am enjoying Africa even more than Asia I think! 2y
BarbaraBB 21 is very doable! 2y

I still can‘t decide! I wrote this but still haven‘t picked one to do. What are you all doing for 2022? https://bookriot.com/2022-reading-challenges/ Feel free to drop me a comment here if you‘re doing a challenge in 2022 😊

Singout I‘m only doing Litsy ones: #Nonfiction2022 and #Booked2022, which I both did last year, and #ReadingAfrica2022. I also have done some of the group reads in @Riveted_Reader_Melissa‘s #SheSaid list, and joined the #1619 group. (edited) 2y
Smrloomis @Singout ooh thanks for posting those! They all look good 😍 2y
jessjess Read Harder 21 introduced me to "There May Be Some Collateral Damage" by Metizket which is now my absolute favourite crossover fic. It's a bleach/hp mix that asks what would happen if Ichigo had to go to Hogwarts and what an absolute disaster that would be. 2y

jessjess So thisbyear I'm doing RH again as well as the popsugar challenge. 2y
jessjess I haven't found one on #litsy itself I'm really drawn to so I'll keep an eye out but for now just those two. 2y
Smrloomis @jessjess I‘ve never been organized enough to do Read Harder but am thinking about it for this year. Feel like I have to decide soon 😂 I like that there‘s a RH newsletter this year! 2y
jessjess @Smrloomis yes I like having a newsletter this year too! Sometimes it's a struggle to break out of a certain genre or subject so a challenge is good. 2y
Smrloomis @jessjess Yes! Except of course I‘m already behind on reading the newsletters 😂 Oh well. It‘s just for fun in my case so it‘s ok! 2y
Singout I forgot to say #NYWD22! Sorry, @Amiable (who is a great partner)! I only did Booked and Nonfiction, with some of SheSaid, so adding Africa and NYWD is a lot (but fortunately it's all flexible and there's lots of overlap). I've even, um, created a chart.
2y
Amiable @Singout I wasn‘t sure if I should list it as a challenge because it isn‘t challenging at all —it‘s a joy! 🙂 2y
Smrloomis @Amiable @Singout awesome! Definitely yes to a chart 😅😅😅 2y
BarbaraBB Thanks for writing and sharing this. I am doing a couple of challenges, among which #ReadingAfrica2022. Your crosslink to Taleaway is fantastic! 2y
Smrloomis @BarbaraBB Thank *you* for reading it! Always glad to help others grow their TBRs even more 😂🥳 2y

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I want to complete Booked2022, PopSugar, and the 52 Book Club. I've got Read Harder and a few others that I hope to finish/participate in. 2y
Smrloomis @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick That‘s great!! I‘m thinking about getting 52 in but I‘m already behind 🤦🏻‍♀️😅 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I found out about the 52 books 2021 challenge in late May/early June and so many I had already read fit prompts so I applied them and finished the challenge. 🤣 2y
Smrloomis @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 😂 Oooh I love it! I‘ve tried writing out a list for 2022 but found what I picked not quite the inspiration I was hoping for 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think I‘ll try again and see if a different version is more appealing… (edited) 2y
WJCintron @Smrloomis 😁 👍 Go for it!!! 2y

As we're getting close to the end of the year and looking back on 2021, one of my goals for next year is to read more diversely. I've done some this year, but I'd like to make it more of a priority and bring more awareness to my choices.
There are a lot of reading challenges for 2022 planned but nothing with this focus. So I was thinking of starting my own and I wanted to see if my favorite litsy community would like to join me on this journey ⬇️

peanutnine I was thinking of having each month of the year dedicated to a certain heritage or culture or minority. The goal each month would be to read at least one book with an author and/or main character of that background.
I will post the list of monthly prompts ahead of time so you can plan your year if that's your thing. Let me know if you would be interested in joining a challenge like this! I'd love your feedback

Laughterhp Oh I would be interested! I‘m always looking to diversify my reading, but find it tough to do. 2y

PageShifter I am in. I read quite diversely already - but this still sounds like an adventure. 2y
xicanti I‘m always in favour of diversity challenges, but to be honest, I‘m leery of the “author and/or main character” stipulation. I feel like that leaves a lot of wiggle room for people to read, for example, a novel about Japanese characters written by a White American instead of a similar book by a Japanese writer. I‘ve seen a lot of that in the geography-focused challenges and to me, it doesn‘t fit the brief. 2y
peanutnine @xicanti that's a really good point. I was thinking about character representation in the story in addition to supporting diverse authors. But you're right, the "or" can make things icky with reading books that aren't own voices. I'll change that, thanks for bringing it to my attention! 2y
megnews @peanutnine I can‘t promise to participate every month but I will try to some. 2y
alisiakae I think this is a great idea, and I agree with @xicanti that I would prefer a focus on #OwnVoices books. That‘s what I do with the geography challengeas, I only choose books published by an author from that country, and look for works in translation as much as possible. 2y
Amiable I love this idea! Like @megnews I am not sure I could keep up with every month, but I would love to participate and see the prompts and follow along with what everyone else is reading to get ideas and suggestions to diversify my choices. (edited) 2y
Liz_M I love this idea! I couldn't quite keep up with the #integrateyourshelf prompts this this year, but really enjoyed seeing everyone's recommendations, so a monthly challenge should be just about right! (edited) 2y
leah152 I'm in 😊📚 2y
tokorowilliamwallace The annual Read Harder challenge, I believe, tries to provide this for readers, too---to add background and representative diverse reads to TBRs and on reading culture's radar. I'll try to join you where I can! 2y
jessjess @tokorowilliamwallace was also gonna suggest Read Harder challenge 2y

I‘m using this reading chart from August to add on books that I‘ve read. I have books on here from August. I‘ve added the two books I read in October and now, I‘m going to add on books that I read this month to this graphic. It‘s not summer anymore but I have decided that I want to continue using this chart until it‘s filled in with books.

Here‘s my progress so far on #beatthebacklist. I‘m still not sure what books to read for the other prompts but I see a lot of different ways I can get another bingo. I don‘t know which row to focus on next but maybe the easiest way to get a bingo is to focus on the rows where I only have to read 2 more books in order to get a bingo.

Here‘s my progress for #theunreadshelfproject. For the bonus challenge this month, I‘m going to choose a book I bought because of the hype. I haven‘t decided what to read for this one. I‘m going to look on my bookshelf or look through my digital books to see what I can find. This year, I thought I‘d make it a goal for myself to read 100 books. Except, make the goal wasn‘t just enough, I wanted something visual so I could track my progress, so I printed out this chart. I know it‘s dumb, it‘s clearly made for little kids. I just feel so much more accomplished after finishing a book, and getting to cross out a number.

1 Yes, I do. I have mentioned this to a few people. About 3 years ago, I felt a burning desire to go back to school. I craved it. My youngest, 5-6 at the time, was having trouble in school and my husband just wasn't dependable to make sure Chaya got the support she needed. It just didn't seem right. And I found the Read Harder challenge. It filled that hole.

2020 didn't feel like a great reading year. I completely failed the #shakespeare2020 challenge and didn't read all my #netgalley books. If it weren't for #audiobooks, I wouldn't have made my reading goal at all. I am keeping my goodreads goal the same as last year - hopefully my reading year for 2021 will feel more meaningful.

Not my highest numbers, but some fantastic books during 2020! Reading was often my refuge during a really tough year 😔, as I'm sure it was with many. Here's hoping a new year brings new energy and strength.

My Reading Challenges for 2021:

1. Read 150 books
2. Read at least 25 books by authors that are new to me #newyearnewauthor
3. Start #bookbuyingdiet . I have to read 10 books on my TBR list before I can buy a new book.
4. Join in every readathon available.
5. Join in #LitsyAtoZ for 2021
6. Clear my TBR shelves of as many unfinished/unstarted series as possible.

Butterfinger Great goals!! 3y
Bookishlie Ooooh I like the read 10 books = 1 book. I was gonna go just straight no books but that might be better for my tbr!!! 3y
Buechersuechtling Whoa, when it comes to bookish goals, I‘m always impressed by how “organised” and “well-thought” many of you are. I‘m such a mood-reader and so sensitive to any kind of pressure. But Kevin, you‘re come up with one or two that I am tempted to copy … Especially that one about cleaning my (virtual) tbr-shelves … 😊 3y
BookishMarginalia 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Did you finish the 2020 #LitsyAtoZ challenge? Remember to update your form by 1/1/2021 for a chance at a $25 Amazon Gift card (link on my wall!) 3y

December‘s just over halfway done (really?!?), so here‘s my #bookspinbingo update! No bingos yet, but respectable progress. I‘m hoping to tick off 9 more before the end of the month and expect to have more reading time next week than I‘ve had this week or last.

AmyG A Good Marriage was a really fun thriller. 3y
TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Great progress!!! 3y
Erinsuereads The stand??? Thats a serious undertaking when you have so many others! Good luck, you got this! I am listening to the audio book for a second time right now. 3y
Hooked_on_books @ErinSueMreads I know! 😂 Pretty sure that won‘t get read this month. No biggie. 3y

I completed my reading challenge for 2020 of 50 books! I usually read a whole lot more than that but this year has been crazy and hectic. Hopefully I can read more than 50 next year!

I've increased my reading challenge goal from 130 books to 150!

I don't know whether I'll make it as there's not much of the year left and I have no idea what the next few months will bring - but it's called a challenge for a reason 😂

How is your reading challenge going so far? 😊

shortsarahrose I‘ve bumped mine up this year to 24 (I think I originally had 16). I am at 22, so I should be able to get that 📚 3y
Scochrane26 I have bumped mine up several times this year. Started a little low because didn‘t know what the year would be like. 3y
Prairiegirl_reading I set my goal at 50. I‘m at 53 I think, I‘m happy regardless because last year was only 37. 3y

I just took a look at my progress on reading goals, since we‘re just over halfway through 2020. As of June 30, I‘m on track for number of books read and in-progress series completed, and am close on my monthly goals for poetry and for nonfiction from my TBR. But I‘m really behind on my goal for 2/3 of the books I read to be from my TBR shelf. I blame the pandemic for my increased mood/comfort reading manifested in eBook binges on Libby...
