Peace, Love and Fibre
Peace, Love and Fibre: Over 100 Fibre-Rich Recipes for the Whole Family | Mairlyn Smith
7 posts | 3 read
"Mairlyn Smith's hilarious approach to all foods nutritious and fibre-filled has made her a daytime television favourite. We live for her tasty recipes, her easy-to-digest prep advice, and, of course, her ability to never take herself too seriously." --Tracy Moore, host of Cityline The world's funniest professional home economist and self-appointed Queen of Fibre is back with a beautiful cookbook and a guide to healthy living! Mairlyn Smith, media personality, professional home economist, and author of six bestselling cookbooks, has made it her mission to bring healthy living and flavourful, fibre-rich eating to the masses. But, living healthfully isn't only about the food--it's about your whole approach to life, from how much you exercise to how you cope with stress and the types of people you surround yourself with. And it's because of Mairlyn's belief in the overall power of mind, body, and spirit that her personal motto is "peace, love, and fibre." She invites peace into her life through quiet moments in nature and a practice of gratitude; love comes from family, friends, and a fulfi lling career. As for fibre? Well, Mairlyn and fibre go way back. In fact, Mairlyn believes that in order to be on top of your game, you absolutely must have a fibre-rich diet. In her newest cookbook, Mairlyn breaks down exactly what fibre is, and why it is such an important part of a healthy life. In Fibre 101 or How to Get an A+ on Your Colonoscopy, Mairlyn covers all the basics, using her trademark sense of humour and enthusiasm. You'll learn how fibre positively affects your blood sugar levels and gut health, and how it reduces the risk of certain types of cancer. Then, Mairlyn will teach you exactly how to create a more balanced, fibre-rich diet, without going overboard. Moving into the recipes, you'll find a mouthwatering assortment of choices for every meal and occasion, with dishes such as Pumpkin Spice Griddle Cakes, Cheddar Cheese Mini Dinner Biscuits, Lentil & Wheat Berry Salad with Strawberries & Mint, Slow-Cooker Pulled Pork, Chicken & Chickpea Curry, and even desserts like Chocolate Fudge Cake! Each recipe has full nutritional breakdowns and helpful icons to highlight the vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free, and gluten-free dishes. Sprinkled throughout are Mairlyn's musings on life, love, and everything in between. Both a beautiful cookbook and a guide to healthy living, Peace, Love & Fibre will have you feeling your best--inside and out--in no time at all.

Mehso-so

Home economist & Second City alum Mairlyn Smith is the self-appointed Queen of Fibre. Lentils in muffins, prunes in chocolate cake, flaxseed in everything. Her humour is welcome in the recipe headers, but I didn‘t see anything I wanted to make. Beef Buddha Bowl? Roasted veg as “Ratatouille”? Pesto repurposed as “Flavour Bombs”? No, no, no. Ultra low fat & low salt. (I think low-salt tamari is an oxymoron.) Beautiful photos. #canadian #cookbook

Lindy Smith recommends storing unopened cans of beans in the fridge so you can make salads at a moment‘s notice. I like room temperature salad, which is probably why this suggestion seems so weird. 3y
8little_paws that is a totally bizarre suggestion re: unopened cans of beans!

Lindy @8little_paws Ok, so it‘s not just me. Glad to know I‘m not alone! 3y

Mairlyn Smith showcases her teacup collection in this cookbook. I recognize those with Royal Albert patterns (Silver Birch, Blossom Time, Petit Point) because these were prized by my aunts, great aunts and grandmother. Smith writes that if you follow her on Instagram, she posts hundreds of morning tea photos with #UseYourGoodStuff. “I know it‘s a cliché, but life is short and you can‘t take your fancy china with you when you go.”

Cathythoughts Lovely cup & saucer 💕 3y
LeahBergen I can immediately identify the old Royal Albert patterns, too. 😆 3y
Lindy @LeahBergen My paternal grandmother had a huge set of Old Country Roses, used for all family gatherings. My mother had the pattern called Celebration, but only because she was pressured by Grandma into selecting one. 3y
Lindy @Cathythoughts I like the Silver Birch pattern too. 😊 3y

I used to think that eggplant was a boring vegetable. It didn‘t have much flavour, or it was bitter. Then I discovered greenhouse-grown eggplants & I was pleasantly surprised! They weren‘t bitter & they were excellent barbecued. Apparently, eggplants only get bitter as they age. Hold the phone, is that a metaphor about life?

I have several recipes I‘ve tagged in this wonderful cookbook. Today, I‘ve been busy mixing, stirring, baking & rotating two trays of homemade maple cinnamon granola (whilst listening to my new audiobook, the second Maisie Dobbs, ‘Birds of a Feather‘). My house smells AMAZING!! After five rounds of rotation baking, the dried cranberries have been added, mixed throughly & is now cooling. I can‘t wait to use this with my morning yoghurt & fruit.

AlaMich Sounds delicious but rather labor-intensive. 😊 5y
catebutler @AlaMich I was kind of unsure at first, ha! 😅 But, it actually wasn‘t too bad. I made a little mark on the parchment paper and it was super easy to remember the rotation. And now I have homemade granola without all the added preservatives and junk. And I love how good it smells too. ☺️ 5y
TheAromaofBooks I really need to get back into making granola! For a while I did it regularly, and then got out of the habit. There are so many delicious recipes for it. 5y

catebutler @TheAromaofBooks I know! There is such a difference between homemade and store bought, and like you mentioned, so many great recipes and ways to mix it up. I hope you do make a batch again. 💓 5y
BookBabe Mmmmm, looks delicious! 😋 5y
catebutler @BookBabe It is one of my favourite granola recipes now, and it definitely put me in the mood for autumn too! 🍂 5y

#BookFitnessChallenge Week 3 Check-in: This week I‘ve focused on nutrition. I cook balanced meals regularly, but I‘m always looking for fresh ideas. This week I made green curry, coconut quinoa porridge, sheet pan honey lime chicken w/ veggies & a veggie frittata & loved each dish! And this delightful book just showed up in the post. 📦📮I follow Mairlyn‘s blog & IG account, she‘s hilarious & all that I hope to be when I grow up! #BFC #BFCR2
