Kamishibai Man
Kamishibai Man | Allen Say
4 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
The Kamishibai man used to ride his bicycle into town where he would tell stories to the children and sell them candy, but gradually, fewer and fewer children came running at the sound of his clappers. They were all watching their new televisions instead. Finally, only one boy remained, and he had no money for candy. Years later, the Kamishibai man and his wife made another batch of candy, and he pedaled into town to tell one more storyhis own. When he comes out of the reverie of his memories, he looks around to see he is surrounded by familiar facesthe children he used to entertain have returned, all grown up and more eager than ever to listen to his delightful tales. Using two very different yet remarkable styles of art, Allen Say tells a tale within a tale, transporting readers seamlessly to the Japan of his memories.

Set in Japan, a storyteller goes through the transition of tv and children enjoying tv more than his stories. It is a sweet story about how children do grow up to appreciate true art and love.

Allen Say is another great author! I love reading his stories about different cultures and most often set in other countries. This one is from Japan.

There is something soft & subtle about this picture book for the slightly young reader - a touching tribute to the kamishibai of Japan, who told stories using animation to small children. In this story, a former kamishibai man decides to visit the city for the day & tell stories; what he discovers goes way beyond his imagination. A nice story that looks at a piece of Japanese history & art (a precursor to manga and anime). Letter K for #BBRC #A2Z

What a neat little piece of Japanese history told in a picture book for older kids! Kamishibai was a paper theater that performers transported from place to place on bicycles. This story tells of its heyday and then how it lost popularity to the television. But the afterword tells how the artists moved on to create manga! #bbrc #A2Z:K
