This was a pretty quick read but despite that, the plot moved slow. There were events that reminded me of ‘Gone Girl‘ - unlikeable, temperamental husband; did he kill her or is the author gaslighting us….but the ending ultimately killed the mood for me. #AuthorAMonth

Patricia Highsmith‘s main characters/‘villains‘ are always interesting, very often with psychopathic tendencies. Here, Sydney is no exception, in fact I was quite perplexed with his odd behaviour and play acting. Maybe that‘s what goes on in the mind of a highly imaginative writer. But his self absorbed actions only brought tragedies. Absorbing read, pretty good, but I didn‘t like it as much as Deep Water or Strangers on a Train.

Overall I think this was flawed, but too interesting not to recommend. The basic premise is that a mystery writer is suspected of murdering his wife who has left for an indefinite period after they've been having marital problems. But instead of the tropes you might expect in this set up...you get a really strange series of unexpected events, some I liked, others I'm not sure. So...intriguing, but not easy to rate! 😮
