Devil's Picnic: Around the World in Pursuit of Forbidden Fruit
Devil's Picnic: Around the World in Pursuit of Forbidden Fruit | Taras Grescoe
2 posts | 1 read
A journey into illicit pleasure the world over. From Norwegian moonshine to the pentobarbital sodium sipped by suicide tourists in Switzerland and, in between, baby eels killed by an infusion of tobacco, a garlicky Spanish stew of bull's testicles, tea laced with cocaine, and malodorous French cheese Taras Grescoe has written a travelogue of forbidden indulgences. As Grescoe crisscrosses the globe in pursuit of his quarry, he delves into questions of regional culture and repressive legislation from the clandestine absinthe distillation in an obscure Swiss valley to the banning of poppy seed biscuits in Singapore and launches into a philosophical investigation of what's" truly" bizarre: how something as fundamental as the plants and foods we consume could be so vilified and demonized. An investigation into what thrills us, what terrifies us, and what would make us travel ten thousand miles and evade the local authorities, " The Devil's Picnic" is a delicious and compelling expedition into the heart of vice and desire."

1. The Grand Canyon. I've never been there and it's on my bucket list to see before I die.
2. I don't want to seem antisocial, but after the week I've had, I'd prefer to go alone, to absorb the peace and quiet.
3. Jameson Irish Whiskey, Coke, ice, fried chicken, potato salad, deviled eggs and cheesecake.

Thank you @TheRiehlDeal for the tag.

KathyWheeler Sometimes you just need to be alone. Yesterday, I had had too much exposure to too many people; when I got home, I told my husband and daughter that then went to my room and closed the door. Even one more person was just too much for me. 2y
RamsFan1963 @KathyWheeler Ever since my store began its store closing sales, I've been majorly stressed. I'm so looking forward to having this weekend off, just in time for @Andrew65 #20in4 readathon. 2y
Andrew65 Hope the reading helps you de-stress at least a little. 2y
KathyWheeler @RamsFan1963 I‘m sorry you‘ve been so stressed. I do hope the readathon helps with that. 2y
Nute I‘ve had those type of days, when ‘me time‘ needs to be ‘alone time.‘ There‘s definitely nothing wrong with that! Enjoy this long weekend, Kevin!🙂 2y

I enjoyed learning the sordid history of some of the worlds' most controversial, and arguably delicious foods, but I could have done with less political commentary. Frescoes really knows how to tease the reader and draw them in, but he lost me when he went from ardent foodie to soapbox preacher.
