Library Haul. 3 of these were on hold and became available and 3 I grabbed while there. That's usually how it goes. I tell my husband that I'm going to pick up a book and come back with more.

Book #22 of 2023: “Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson

I can‘t remember if I read this in middle school or not but it seemed vaguely familiar. It‘s well written YA fiction.

I was fortunate enough to have met Laurie many years ago. Speaking with her was refreshing and engaging. She gifted my daughter several of her books signed & personalized. She was amazing.
Somehow, I never picked this one up. I‘m so glad I remedied that. This book is excellent. I can‘t wait to get home & discuss it with my daughter. (She reread it after finding out I hadn‘t read it)

Here are my top picks from my #AuldLangSpine list! These are the ones I'm gonna put on my bookspin list to read in January but I'll probably try to get to more throughout the year. I've owned the tagged for years but have never read it so I'm excited to finally cross it off my TBR! I think I will listen to audiobooks for Poet X and Scythe and the other two are available digitally through my library. They look so fun! @shortsarahrose @monalyisha

shortsarahrose This is a good selection 👍🏻 I read Poet X in print, but want to go back and listen to it on audio at some point because I hear the audiobook is amazing (Acevedo is a slam poet and the novel is written in that style). 1y
CBee Ohhhh, the Scythe series is AMAZING 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 1y
monalyisha Can confirm that the audiobook for The Poet X is the way to go! I‘ve listened to all of hers. That one and the tagged have been my favorites. 1y

Librariana @shortsarahrose I second @monalyisha's comment and can also enthusiastically confirm that Elizabeth Acevedo is a wonderful narrator. I've listened to all 3 of her YA novels and am looking forward to her adult debut! She's definitely a fave 😊 1y
shortsarahrose @Librariana I didn‘t know she had an adult novel coming out! That‘ll definitely end up on my TBR. 1y

Or am I not supposed to be here?🤔

LibrarianRyan I am not your age, but you are welcome at any age. You just have to find the right people to follow. I love MG and YA and would be happy to reccomend books. If you like Sci-Fi try Illuminae. If you want something newer I just finished Hotel Magnifique. It was pretty good. I'm reading You are So Dead by Parsons right now. Ehe, might DNF but it is a murder horror. 2y

Really good. Melinda‘s voice is distinctive yet recognizable. Well paced. As much as I could guess what had happened to Melinda that made her an outcast/silent, I still wanted to keep reading to see what would happen. I wish I could time travel back to seventh grade and give this to preteen me, who, although not experiencing the exact same things, was definitely feeling outcast and depressed. Banned Books Week Day 5!

Speak is one of the top ten most banned books of 2020. This is because of its discussion of rape and also because 'it casts male students in a negative light.' *sighs*

Laurie Halse Anderson tours the country giving talks to schools about the book and about sexual assault. She has helped hundreds of young people since this book was published. I had the honor and pleasure of meeting her a few years ago! #bannedbooksweek

No means no means no means no. Women are not furniture. Consent is perhaps the most important thing we can teach our children. I read this in one day.
I think it should be on summer reading lists, not required but recommended. So young people can see that suicide is not the only answer to something so horrific. I know she did a little self harm, but so many young victims choose death because their shame feels unsurpassable.Book 46 in 2021

Allthebookclubs Also, the author did use the R word (retard), before we all realized it‘s not okay to use it. In recommending this book, I am in NO WAY condoning the use of this word. 3y

I really loved the writing style and how the author revealed the mystery of what had happened to the main character. I connected so much with the MC, especially when she was dealing with Heather. God, I think we all have these type of 'friends' at one point in our lives. I absolutely loved her interactions with David. And the ending was just chef kiss, gave me goosebumps. Loved this book a lot.

I am so glad I read this! I can‘t believe it took me so long to finally get to it. I‘m sure every introvert could relate to her. The ending had mixed emotions for me; from anger to joy. I‘m hoping we get a sequel, cause I‘d like to see Melinda‘s journey through high school and see how she copes with the trauma she went through.

MySharonaK Yes, I wish for that too! I know Melinda makes a short appearance in another Anderson novel but it‘s not a sequel. Maybe someday... 3y

This book is about a 14 year old girl named Melinda Sordino. For the majority of the book, any background information about Melinda remains a mystery. All we are aware of is that during the summer Melinda and her friends were invited to a party with older students which was a rarity. The party ended in Melinda calling the cops which caused her to lose all of her friends and the majority of the school looked down on her.

chloeturchyn The bulk of the book consists of Melindas day to day life. It seems somewhat dull when you are reading it but it provides context. It shows how alone and tiresome Melinda feels. She doesn‘t see value in relationships anymore, nor does she see value in school. We watch as her life slowly begins to fall apart, the only thing she still values is her art class, and the teacher (Mr. Freeman). 3y
chloeturchyn Nearing the end of the book Melinda finally comes out about the real reason she called the cops at the party and she finds comfort in unsuspecting people. 3y
chloeturchyn If you like books with a feel good and tear jerking ending I recommend this book. 3y

The point of view of this book is first person. Melinda Sordino (the protagonist) is the narrator. I believe the author did this because it shows her thoughts. Her thoughts that not one other character is aware of throughout the book.

I‘ve just finished Speak, which is a book that I was assigned for my English class. I enjoyed it more than I do most school assigned books, but I didn‘t love it. It has that slightly pretentious air that reads like it was written just to win a Newberry award. That‘s just not really a writing style that sits well with me.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ All teens should read this. It takes a minute to warm to Melinda, but she‘s so utterly broken, shutting everyone out, even the reader. Anderson relates various aspects (trees, cubism, The Scarlet Letter, the ever-changing school mascot, etc) to Mel‘s circumstances. She feels so real because she could be any of us, all of us. The format/style is really quite brilliant, intending to wholly engage its target.
