Maisie Dobbs (Anniversary)
Maisie Dobbs (Anniversary) | Jacqueline Winspear
10th Anniversary Edition with a special Afterword by the author Maisie Dobbs got her start as a maid in an aristocratic London household when she was thirteen. Her employer, suffragette Lady Rowan Compton, soon became her patron, taking the remarkably bright youngster under her wing. Lady Rowan's friend, Maurice Blanche, often retained as an investigator by the European elite, recognized Maisie s intuitive gifts and helped her earn admission to the prestigious Girton College in Cambridge, where Maisie planned to complete her education. The outbreak of war changed everything. Maisie trained as a nurse, then left for France to serve at the Front, where she found and lost an important part of herself. Ten years after the Armistice, in the spring of 1929, Maisie sets out on her own as a private investigator, one who has learned that coincidences are meaningful, and truth elusive. Her very first case involves suspected infidelity but reveals something very different. In the aftermath of the Great War, a former officer has founded a working farm known as The Retreat, that acts as a convalescent refuge for ex-soldiers too shattered to resume normal life. When Fate brings Maisie a second case involving The Retreat, she must finally confront the ghost that has haunted her for over a decade."

Maisie and I got off to a slow start. For a while I was wondering whether or not I was reading the first in the series...I appreciated greatly the jump back in time for her full story. From there, I was enthralled and didn‘t want to put the book down. I haven‘t read much WWI-based fiction...I found myself thinking about Downton Abbey, too. Anyone else?? 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️

I have a long story behind my expectations for this book/series (with which I will not bore you). Long story short, I shouldn't be surprised that I was a little disappointed. It's a stretch to call this a mystery. The time line is weird. The author has Maisie tilt her head to encourage companions to spill their guts to her way too often. These are the irritants just off the top of my (untilted) head. I didn't hate it, but I can't recommend it.

amie I love historical mysteries so I thought that I would love this book, but I've tried to read it twice and couldn't finish it either time. 1mo

I picked up these two books from the library this morning. I read A Man Callef Ove last year, but I need to reread it for book club. I bought one of the Maisie Dobbs books at a book sale, but then I heard that you should read them in order, so I got the first one.

rretzler Maisie Dobbs is one of my favorite series. The first couple of books are a little different in tone than the rest of the series, so if you enjoy them right away, fantastic! But if you‘re on the fence for some reason, don‘t give up - the series is worth it. I have a couple of friends who felt that way, but kept reading and now love the series. Happy reading😀 2mo

I was pleasantly surprised by this audiobook! I don‘t read a lot of private detective mysteries, but this one has enough historical fiction-WWI depth that I was completely engrossed. Great writing, interesting storyline, and strong narration. I love Maisie as a character, and may just read some more of these!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was my #femaledetective book for #Booked2019

This was my choice for Female Detective for #Booked2019 - it‘s not your typical mystery/ detective story.

The first part of the book Maisie sets up her detective agency and she solves a case. It then jumps to Maisie‘s beginning when she first becomes associated with Lady Rowan and her history in WWI. Then it combines everything with the bigger mystery at play.

It was mostly historical fiction, I wouldn‘t call it a mystery. But the end 😭💔

sprainedbrain I‘m reading this now for the same prompt. 😃 2mo

Just realized I didn‘t leave a review back in December when I read this...🤷🏻‍♀️ Longer review on Goodreads.

I‘m officially a new fan of Maisie Dobbs! ❤️ This one kept me up late!! I loved seeing every stage of her life...really made me feel like I knew her well...and yet in some ways she was still an enigma. Wonderful supporting cast, lots of WW1 period details. Looking forward to continuing adventures! 4.5/5⭐️

A period mystery, set after WWI, in which the War is part of the storyline. It captures a shift in roles of the aristocracy and the common people. Maisie is bright, and the cast of characters around her are intriguing. I look forward to jumping into the next book in the series.

Slow burning mystery where the after effects of The Great War resonate. I‘m not sure about all the backstory that was included about the main character, especially as this was not originally meant to be a series. Will probably read future Maisie Dobbs books.

The first in the series of an extraordinaire female PI set in 1920s London. The mystery was not-much-of-a-mystery, and Maisie felt a touch too perfect. I did like the premise and setting; the author‘s ability to convey the aftermath of war and the effect on the men who fought in the war; the use of psychology in solving mystery..most of all I liked the backstory of Maisie‘s childhood and her work as a nurse on the front during the war. 👇

erzascarletbookgasm I may or may not read the next one. Glad I‘ve read it for #Booked2019 #winter #femaledetective 4mo

A very well written mystery set post WWI. Winspear‘s compassion for those who suffered physical, emotional, and mental injuries in WWI is almost unsettling in its intensity. In this first book, there is a large flashback to Maisie‘s youth and then her time spent nursing on the frontlines. I didn‘t enjoy the flashback section as much but it was interesting.

I started this over a year ago but couldn‘t get into it. I decided to try again. As much as I usually love books like this, Maisie Dobbs fell flat for me. Maisie herself has very little personality and is more of a Mary Sue character. I liked the WWI history aspect of it. Bottom line: I didn‘t really like this but I‘m willing to read one more in the series to see if it was a fluke. 2.5⭐️

The Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear is great! In an interview she said

“When I was a child, I loved a British author named Ruby Ferguson. She wrote about Jill and her horses. For a girl who loved horses and would have given anything for a horse, I could have read every book one hundred times. Now I have my two horses, one of them jet black, which was something the Ferguson's heroine wanted.”

1. Yes. When you live alone, it‘s company.
2. I only have Amazon Prime and have only watched it maybe once.
3. Reality. I don‘t have to pay attention and I can read!
4. See answer to 3. 😁

Pickpick

Absolutely loved Maisie Dobbs, the characters and all the wonderful bits of advice from Maurice. #recommendsday #mystery

"Truth walks toward us on the paths of our questions...as soon as you think you have the answer, you have closed the path and may miss vital new information."
