Death At La Fenice
Death At La Fenice: (Brunetti 1) | Donna Leon
The twisted maze of Venice's canals has always been shrouded in mystery. Even the celebrated opera house, La Fenice, has seen its share of death ... but none so horrific and violent as that of world-famous conductor, Maestro Helmut Wellauer, who was poisoned during a performance of La Traviata. Even Commissario of Police, Guido Brunetti, used to the labyrinthine corruptions of the city, is shocked at the number of enemies Wellauer has made on his way to the top - but just how many have motive enough for murder? The beauty of Venice is crumbling. But evil is one thing that will never erode with age.

My first dip intro Donna Leon‘s work, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Clever mystery, engaging characters, and she does a masterful job of making Venice a character in itself.

The first in the Guido Brunetti mystery series, and it won‘t be the last one I read! I enjoyed this police procedural series set in Venice. Leon‘s writing style is superb, a mix of hefty topics and sarcastic humor. It was fun to read about Venice and to visit the canals vicariously. I can see why this series is popular among my staff at the library!

TrishB I‘ve looked at this series a few times! 4mo

The best way to battle the extreme cold is a super hot bath and a new (to me) mystery series. #winterstormreadathon

writerlibrarian It's a really good series. Leon captures the feel of the city. The 'mysteries' are often in shades of grey. The 'crew' at the police station grows on you like Brunetti's family and his nemesis. 5mo
Crazeedi You are reading my FAVORITE series!!! Keep reading them, they get better and better. It's not always "find the criminal and happily ever after" commisario brunetti is great, especially the food descriptions 5mo

Donna Leon has written four previous Guido Brunetti novels, Death and Judgment, Dressed for Death, Death in a Strange Country, and Death at La Fenice, which won the Suntory Prize for the best suspense novel of 1991. She teaches English at the University of Maryland extension at a U.S. Air Force base near Venice Italy, where she has lived for over twenty years.

Undoubtedly well written this mystery embraced embedding Venice as a character more than its underlying mystery. I loved the main protagonist Brunetti as well as his family but was largely uninterested in the outcome (truth bomb. will read the rest of the series at some point as Brunetti was so appealing!) accompanied reading with a v east London take on Venetian risi e bisi. recipe summaries below for my 2 #backpackeurope points @JenP

Itchyfeetreader To prepare 1. Gently heat chopped onion in butter for 3 mins on low heat. 2. Add 2 finely chopped garlic cloves and a pinch of ground pepper 3. Add 5 g butter and then rice for 4 servings (240-300g) stirring well 4. Add glass of white wine sitiiring regularly for 20 mins regularly add ladle of warm chicken stock stirring constantly. 6. Continuing to add chicken stock to rice mix. Heat oil in alternate pan and fry bacon. (edited) 10mo
Itchyfeetreader 7. After 3 mins of cooking bacon steam peas for 3 mins. Muddle peas with tea spoon of water and tea spoon of chopped fresh mint. 8. Add pea mix to rice adding final ladle of stock and stirring 9. Steam portion of peas for 3 mins whilst stirring rice mix. 10 mix rice, peas and bacon.‘sprinkle with black pepper and mint plus paresan to taste. jOB DONE!! Goodbye Italy 🇮🇹 hello Slovenia 🇸🇮 10mo

Although I do like Venice as a setting, I just don't like her writing. Might the fault of the translation, though.

Louise I find that Donna Leon's books are better in German than in the original English. For me, the series started off very strong, but the later books became less exciting and a bit hit-or-miss. I do like Commissario Brunetti, though! 😉 2y
