9 posts | 8 read | 4 to read
From #1 NY Times Bestselling Author, Barbara Freethy, comes a romantic new contemporary series about the Callaways, a big, blended Irish family born to serve and protect. The second oldest of the Callaway clan, Aiden Callaway veered from the family tradition of urban firefighting and became a smokejumper, never questioning his choice until the job took the life of his friend, Kyle, and left Aiden with injuries and fractured memories. Everyone blames Aiden for what happened, but he doesn't remember, nor is he sure he wants to remember. The truth may clear Aiden of blame but destroy Kyle's reputation and hurt the people he left behind. Aiden seeks help from an unlikely ally ... Sara had always been untouchable, sweet, innocent, his sister's best friend, and the girl next door. But one reckless night in their youth took their relationship to a new level. Sara has never forgiven or forgotten the way Aiden brought it crashing down, but she's no longer that girl with the crazy crush. She's a woman in search of her own truth. The sparks between Aiden and Sara have been smoldering for a very long time. Sara is afraid to take another chance on a man who broke her heart, and Aiden knows better than anyone how dangerous an intense fire can be. As teenagers they weren't ready for each other. Are they ready now? ** ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS is the first book in an eight book connected contemporary romance series featuring the intriguing Callaway family. Love, mystery, adventure -- the Callaways have it all! Also Available In The Callaway Series: ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS (#1) SO THIS IS LOVE (#2) FALLING FOR A STRANGER (#3) BETWEEN NOW AND FOREVER (#4) * NOBODY BUT YOU (A Callaway Wedding Novella) ALL A HEART NEEDS (#5) THAT SUMMER NIGHT (#6) WHEN SHADOWS FALL (#7) SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW (#8) IF I DIDN'T KNOW BETTER (#9) ** Fans of Nora Roberts, Susan Mallery, Jill Shalvis and Robyn Carr may enjoy this connected series blend of family, suspense, and contemporary romance! PRAISE FOR THE CALLAWAYS! "I love the Callaways! Heartwarming romance, intriguing suspense and sexy alpha heroes. What more could you want?" -- NYT Bestselling Author Bella Andre "I adore the Callaways, a family we'd all love to have. Each new book is a deft combination of emotion, suspense and family dynamics. The cover on this book is terrible and doesn't seem to go with the blurb on the back, but I'm giving it a go anyway as it was an Amazon freebie and sounds like it could be good.

In my opinion, the best character name is not just one character, but a whole family name. The Callaway family are one of my favourites because their name represents how amazing their family is. It's big, but they are always supporting each other, and living up to the Callaway name! #day19 #booktober #bestcharactername

I felt like all the issues got resolved too easily. I liked the characters and at some point I might read book 2, because I'm interested in the mystery they need to solve. The B&N read outs are giving me a chance to try authors I haven't read before, which is nice.

3.5/5 stars. I discovered this book since it was the serial read this month on Nook. It was an enjoyable and sweet, if somewhat predictable, romance with a touch of mystery. I probably would have given it four stars, but the ending felt rushed. I'll likely continue on with the series, though, as there is a storyline that remains unresolved (involving arson and a missing beloved teacher) which should be a major plot point in the next book.

Ummm. It was free through B&N readouts, and since it was just a chapter a day I was able to get through it. But it was very hokey and predictable and not my kind of thing at all. I should have gone with my gut when I didn't like the cover. If the story is going to be so flat, couldn't there at least be some hot love scenes? 😂

Angela_AVT I find many of B Freethy's books to be flat like you mentioned. :( 8y
sprainedbrain @Angela_AVT This was my first of hers... Probably my last too. 😐 8y
Angela_AVT 😔 Sad. But there are so many other books in the world. The last quick and easy romance (awesomely written and very engaging) I read was Anything But Love by Abigail Strom. If you're looking for something. :) 8y
Angela_AVT Oh... Hah... I see that you saw it on litsy. 😄 8y
sprainedbrain @Angela_AVT 😃 yes thanks! I do believe I will check that one out. 8y

I was going to pass on this month's B&N Serial Read: On the surface it doesn't look like my kind of romance novel; but it actually has some decent reviews; I need something to alternate w/a graphically violent mystery I'm reading, and it's free... So we'll see!

LitHousewife Free is good. No harm if it doesn't work out.😊 8y

Not my usual kind of thing, and the cover art does not appeal to me at all, but it's free this month on B&N readouts. First 2 chapters have been enough to keep me coming back. 😃

I was so excited when I learned that she was publishing this series in print! I love the Callaway series! On a Night Like This is the perfect beginning to a series about how family is one of the most important things in the world!
