Leaves of Grass (Wisehouse Classics - Authentic Reproduction of the 1855 First Edition) (2016)
Leaves of Grass (Wisehouse Classics - Authentic Reproduction of the 1855 First Edition) (2016) | Walt Whitman
ABOUT THIS EDITION: With exception of the titles of the different parts - which were added, for better navigation, from later editions - this edition presents an authentic reproduction of the original 1855 first edition of 'Leaves of Grass' by Walt Whitman. Taking into account that Whitman did much of the typesetting for the first edition himself, the editors of this reproduction, paid special attention not only to text itself but also to an authentic reproduction of pagination, paragraphing and linebreaks. LEAVES OF GRASS is a poetry collection by the American poet Walt Whitman (1819-1892). Though the first edition was published in 1855, Whitman spent most of his professional life writing and re-writing LEAVES OF GRASS, revising it multiple times until his death. This resulted in vastly different editions over four decades-the first a small book of twelve poems and the last a compilation of over 400 poems. LEAVES OF GRASS has its genesis in an essay called The Poet by Ralph Waldo Emerson, published in 1844, which expressed the need for the United States to have its own new and unique poet to write about the new country's virtues and vices. Whitman, reading the essay, consciously set out to answer Emerson's call as he began work on the first edition of LEAVES OF GRASS. Whitman, however, downplayed Emerson's influence, stating, "I was simmering, simmering, simmering; Emerson brought me to a boil." On May 15, 1855, Whitman registered the title LEAVES OF GRASS with the clerk of the United States District Court, Southern District of New Jersey, and received its copyright. The first edition was published in Brooklyn at the printing shop of two Scottish immigrants, James and Andrew Rome, whom Whitman had known since the 1840s, on July 4, 1855. Whitman paid for and did much of the typesetting for the first edition himself. The book did not include the author's name, instead offering an engraving by Samuel Hollyer depicting Whitman in work clothes and a jaunty hat, arms at his side. Early advertisements for the first edition appealed to "lovers of literary curiosities" as an oddity. Sales on the book were few but Whitman was not discouraged. The poems of LEAVES OF GRASS are loosely connected and each represents Whitman's celebration of his philosophy of life and humanity. This book is notable for its discussion of delight in sensual pleasures during a time when such candid displays were considered immoral. Where much previous poetry, especially English, relied on symbolism, allegory, and meditation on the religious and spiritual, LEAVES OF GRASS (particularly the first edition) exalted the body and the material world. Influenced by Ralph Waldo Emerson and the Transcendentalist movement, itself an offshoot of Romanticism, Whitman's poetry praises nature and the individual human's role in it. However, much like Emerson, Whitman does not diminish the role of the mind or the spirit; rather, he elevates the human form and the human mind, deeming both worthy of poetic praise.

Earlier this year I read and fell in love with Mark Doty‘s What Is The Grass, part memoir part analysis of Leaves of Grass through its various iterations. I‘m not at a place in my life where I‘m going to do a deep dive into analyzing the changes between each of the editions of Whitman, but it still made me want to read the first edition and get a general sense of the differences between it and the deathbed version.👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

IndoorDame This 1855 edition is a powerful piece of writing all on its own, but I think my biggest takeaway is how incredible it is that Whitman dedicated himself to refining it for the rest of his life. Because of the masterpiece it turned into. Because of the opportunity it gives writers and scholars to study his process.👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼 4mo
IndoorDame And because that singular focus is almost unheard of in artists, who notoriously lack the attention span needed not to get sidetracked by exciting new projects and ideas. 4mo

#weirdwords #weirdwordwednesday Every time I look this up it still just means reincarnation. If Whitman were using some incomprehensible Greek term for that, sure, but the guy who‘s obsessed with it is writing the introduction to the introduction of this volume which makes him some 1960s poet who‘s not on my radar. Still, he‘s taught me something new, which is always cool. @CBee

CBee Super cool word! I giggled a little at “the introduction to the introduction” 😂 4mo
IndoorDame @CBee I‘ve noticed that the older the classic the more forwards it seems to pick up. This one has 2. Both conveniently labeled as “introduction” 😂 4mo

#44-46 of my year and I‘m going to read 3 of my short, but brilliant I‘m sure, books so that I can stay ahead of my goodreads goal and not feel rushed when I read my longer books 😅 I have read Catcher in the Rye way back in high school but I‘m due for a refresher course. Phoebe was always my favorite so it‘ll be nice to revisit as an adult now.

Caffeinated_Reader On page 59 and I don‘t know what I expected but it wasn‘t this lol I knew it was poetry but I guess I assumed it was a book of different poems. This is what I get for not looking into the books I read 😅 I just pick them up and dive in! 4y
Caffeinated_Reader At first I was like, what the heck did I get myself into!?! But then as I opened my mind and heart to what I was reading I could feel the love and humanity radiating off the pages. I went into this little book not knowing anything about it and I assumed it was a book of different poems but it was so much more than that. I loved it. 4y
Caffeinated_Reader I think especially in the times we are currently in it‘s nice to be reminded of our humanity and compassion. It‘s especially important to remember the love of all things and that everyone is deserving of love, even if they believe differently than you or sin “worse” than you. I liked this so much. 4y

I admit I was sceptical at first. Who does one translate poems? I read Whitman in English first and loved his texts. But how would they sound in German?

Well, there was no need to be afraid. It's a great translation, that respects the original and transports Whitmans feelings and depths. One travels through Americas wilderness with him, goes to War and gets old.

A book worth reading over and over again.

I managed to survive my first book of poetry. I read the first edition from 1855, and it seems the better edition is the deathbed edition. I plan to read the deathbed at some point, but I think I need some more experience with poetry before I dive back into Whitman.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I can honestly say I very rarely followed Whitman‘s line of thinking in his poetry. The longer the poem, the harder it was to follow the train of thought. I‘m just proud of myself for making it through. This was a mental exercise more than anything else. #WaltWhitman #LeavesofGrass #DrQuinnReadingList #BlameDrMike #poetrymatters 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I‘m definitely going to read the deathbed edition, I even have a copy of it ready to go, but I need some more time with poetry before I try Whitman again. Hopefully in a few months or maybe even at the beginning of 2021 I‘ll understand it better. Fingers crossed. 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics it takes a bit!!! For fun watch With Honors the movie the way it‘s portrayed in there is a interesting think piece. I remember when I first read Sara Teasdale I was literally WTH did I just read and Ohmyword I love it 🤣🤷🏽‍♀️ Whitman was like that for a bit. Now it‘s like a worn out comfortable leather jacket. I‘m so glad you stuck with it, it‘ll come up in books and things and you‘ll say HEY I KNOW THAT! ❤️ 4y

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I‘m still trying to figure out why Sully chose to read that on Dr. Quinn. At one point he tells Brian he doesn‘t have any book smarts, but clearly he does. lol 4y

TheBookHippie @GingerAntics 🤣🤣👏🏼👏🏼score! 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie 🤣😂🤣 I think Sully was hiding the fact he was a genius and didn‘t need school, so Brian would go. It‘s the only logical explanation. 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I was working 72 hours a week when that was on so I never saw it 🤣 my friend was hooked and gave me “reports” during shift change ...so I feel like I watched it ! 4y
TheBookHippie She never mention Whitman I can‘t wait to see her for our monthly visit now! 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie 🤣😂🤣 The show was on Amazon Video until a few weeks ago. I‘m hoping it comes back soon. That‘s really odd, seeing that the episode where Sully reads Whitman is called “The Library” and some books get burned, but then a few seasons later, Walt Whitman actually comes to Colorado Springs and Dr. Mike treats him. He was a major plot point twice. Beth Sullivan must be a Whitman fan. lol (edited) 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I‘ll watch for it to return I think our library has it ..must investigate ! 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie it‘s a good show if strong female lead characters and period pieces are your thing. Sully doesn‘t read Whitman until the 3rd season I think, and Whitman doesn‘t come visit until the 5th season, I think. Still, good stuff all over. 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I have this little problem called insomnia 🤦🏽‍♀️ always looking for new stuff and Netflix ditched Frasier 😭 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie oh, you and me both. Dr. Quinn is great for that!!! She does not stand for these Wild West men and their sexism. 4y
Butterfinger You should be proud. That was a huge accomplishment. 4y
GingerAntics @Butterfinger this was the first, 1855, edition, so it‘s actually much shorter. I think it‘s only got 12 poems on it. The deathbed edition is much larger, but hopefully I‘ll be properly prepared for it when I do read it. 4y

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie oh I always love seeing the original writing of authors, especially before computers came along because they‘re handwritten. There is something slightly lost in the printing process, I think. There is like an added bit of the spirit or soul of the writer when you see their work in handwriting. 4y
Scochrane26 Wendell Berry still writes by hand & won‘t use a computer. (edited) 4y
GingerAntics @Scochrane26 love it! I know Gaiman does as well. There are some that still do. Heck, the Harry Potter books (at least the first ones) were hand written first. Would love to see some of those draft pages. I think it‘s rare now, almost a lost art. I love when authors write by hand, though. 4y

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie That‘s cool! What an awesome tradition to have. This is making me feel very poetry stupid. For whatever reason, when I read it, I never remember what I read. If I reread it, it‘s familiar and I know I‘ve read it, but I don‘t remember it like a remember a narrative or something. 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I have always loved poetry it has always spoken to me. I always felt there was someone out there who thought deeply in words as much as I do and gets lost in them. It takes a bit I think and if you reread it it‘s new everytime ❤️ I think I‘ve always applied poetry to my life and emotion which gives it a personal narrative. 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I‘m kind of that way with music, which is basically poetry set to music, so I get that. I think the more I read poetry, the more it will start clicking. Hopefully. What edition do you guys read? I‘m kind of confused between the 6 different editions and all the extra poems after the first version. I‘m reading the original version, I may have to look into the “deathbed” version. I don‘t see how both can be the definitive edition. 4y

“Loafe with me on the grass...loose the stop from your throat.” I finally got around to reading this poetry collection and I‘m happy I did. It feels much more contemporary and is more sexual and physical than I expected. I loved the mix of the natural world and then the people who inhabit it. It‘s clear how different this body of work is from other poets of the time and is worthy of its praise.

On one hand, it felt purposeful reading such a classic. However, I just don‘t think I‘m highbrow enough to truly appreciate classics like this! I really identified with bits of it, but then other bits were a challenge. Rating is more a reflection of me than this work.
