The Archimedes is a modern merchant steamship in tip-top condition, and in the summer of 1929 it has been picking up goods along the eastern seaboard of the United States before making a run to China. A little overloaded, perhapsthe oddly assorted cargo includes piles of old newspapers and heaps of tobaccothe ship departs for the Panama Canal from Norfolk, Virginia, on a beautiful autumn day. Before long, the weather turns unexpectedly roughrougher in fact than even the most experienced members of the crew have ever encountered. The Archimedes, it turns out, has been swept up in the vortex of an immense hurricane, and for the next four days it will be battered and mauled by wind and waves as it is driven wildly off course. Caught in an unremitting struggle for survival, both the crew and the ship will be tested as never before. Based on detailed research into an actual event, Richard Hughess tale of high suspense on the high seas is an extraordinary story of men under pressure and the unexpected ways they prove their mettleor crack. Yet the originality, art, and greatness of In Hazard stem from something else: Hughess eerie fascination with the hurricane itself, the inhuman force around which this wrenching tale of humanity at its limits revolves. Hughes channels the furies of sea and sky into a piece of writing that is both apocalyptic and analytic. In Hazard is an unforgettable, defining work of modern adventure.

Pickpick

Early in the book the author states that he wants to stay as close to reality as possible, even though telling a fictional story. And that he does. There's a lot of information, especially in the first part. The second part focusses more on the characters and their backgrounds, which makes a good mixture. All in all this book is more for readers who are interested in ships and the sea, especially in the historical context. So yes, a pick for me

PuddleJumper Brilliant! Sounds really interesting 2y

#BookReport 51/19

This week I finished three books.

I was underwhelmed by both In Hazard and Picnic at Hanging Rock.

Fleishman is in Trouble is a book that will stick with me mostly because of its unlikable characters. I was so annoyed by the things that happened, but they made for a great discussion in the comments below my review and that does make a book special I think.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Was it Picnic at Hanging Rock with the extra chapter? 4y
Megabooks Fleishman is definitely a thought-provoking book! (edited) 4y

Mehso-so

In the summer of 1929 a steamship departs from the US to China. The weather turns unexpectedly rough and the ship is being swept up in the vortex of an immense hurricane. Caught in the struggle for survival, both the crew and the ship are tested as never before.

An okay read, not really my kind of book but it was nice to spend a Sunday in front of the fire while it was raining outside all day.

AlaMich I don‘t think I could read this, if for no other reason than I would be constantly imagining how horribly seasick I would be for four days! 4y
erzascarletbookgasm Love your space! 4y
ValerieAndBooks Looks cozy! I like your fireplace. Gas or electric? 4y
BarbaraBB @ValerieAndBooks Gas - for as long as we‘re allowed. My city‘s policy is to substitute all use of gas by electricity in time. 4y
Liz_M That sounds like a near-perfect day (next time I hope you choose a more enjoyable book) 4y
