#BookMail Our bookclub selected this one as our historical fiction selection! Has anyone read it?? I thought James Ellroy writes crime noir? I personally did not vote for this one 🙄But that‘s the way the pages turn😉

Leftcoastzen Wiki him, he‘s got a complicated personal history with crime .I read & liked his series that began with 4y
Cinfhen Thanks for pointing me to his Wiki page @Leftcoastzen He sounds like an interesting character 4y
BarbaraBB I read Black Dahlia earlier this year and was not blown away by him. I don‘t think you will be either... 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y

TrishB Definitely crime. 4y
Ruthiella I went through an Elroy phase in the early aughts. I loved it at the time but they are definitely complex, male focused historical crime novels, dark and cynical. 4y
Cinfhen I hope I‘ll be able to read through it @BarbaraBB @TrishB @Ruthiella the premise sounds good but I‘m not a fan of 50‘s crime genre (edited) 4y

Dizzying, dazzling fictionalised account of the events leading up to the JFK assassination. Historical figures (Hoover, Howard Hughes, Hoffa) appear alongside 3 fictional rogue lawmen each with their own motivations and shifting loyalties. Bewildering and exhilarating in equal measure.

FBI CIA. MOBSTERS. CUBANS. KENNEDYS. Once I adjusted to the writing style I found this to be a very good read.

The writing style is a little different, I had a hard time getting into the first few chapters. It is growing on me though.

Sweettartlaura Ellroy has a distinct voice, to be sure. Sometimes I like to read him just for that - it's immersive. 8y
brendanmleonard I adore this one. One of the great American novels. 8y

Happy 4th! 🎉One of my favorite things about 🇺🇸 is our constant ability to reevaluate and reimagine our past. That can be a very bad thing. But often, our great artists and writers remind us that no icon is sacred, there are new ways of telling stories, and that there are so many left to tell.

GuiltyFeat Ellroy is a genius. This is his masterwork. 8y

Great book! It's about the mob, the FBI, the Kennedy's, and Cuba in the late 1950s/early 1960s. This one really pulled me in and I had a hard time putting it down.
