A feminist, a socialist, and an anarchist walk into Lambeth... I love the ideology behind this book- members of the Fabian Society agitating for social reform, including free clinics and medical care for all, school lunches, and family allowances, surveyed daily life for the working poor of Lambeth and distributed their findings in order to widely broadcast living conditions of everyday workers in London. The result is somewhat dry at times- 👇👇

Andrea313 there are many charts and budget tables; but the individuals themselves (referred to only as Mrs. T, Mr. H, Mrs. R, etc.) are treated with respect in the writing. Any and all judgement is saved for a State that allows men and women to struggle and children to starve. The clear, sharp calls for support and reform reinforce how much things have changed in 100 years, and just how much they've stayed the same. #PersephonePick 2y
batsy This sounds so good! 2y
Andrea313 @batsy I did enjoy it, but I read it slowly over several weeks- I didn't find it to be a real page-turner! Be forewarned that this was originally published as a series of informational pamphlets and it shows; but it was important, necessary, eventually life-changing work, to be sure. 2y

How do poor people get by? A hundred years after this classic exposé, we are living with the same questions. (See $2 a Day, by K.J. Edin and H. L. Shaefer). This 1914 study of London's working poor is as compelling as ever, thanks to easy style, gritty detail, and humanity.
