Considering the temperature dropped from 70s yesterday to 20s today (with snow in the forecast), it‘s a morning for hot tea, a cozy #sweater, and a cookie or three as I listen to my latest #Scarathlon mystery.
I'm covering my library's mystery book club for a colleague on vacation this week which means I get to reread the first one in this delightful series. Decided to try it on audio this time around since it's on hoopla. Enjoying it so much, I may reread the whole series this way before tackling the fourth one since I'm waiting for my hold to come in anyway. #audiobooks
This book was so much fun! I love the concept, and Charlotte Holmes now ranks as one of my favorite female detectives. I do not want to spoil this for anyone who hasn‘t read it. If you like strong, interesting female characters and historical mysteries, you owe it to yourself to try this.
Hey everyone! Yes, I‘m still alive, just super busy lately, we‘ve been remodeling our house for the last couple of months, so every spare moment has been spent cleaning...I hope to get some stamps soon so I can send out the letters that I‘ve written, like, months ago. As for this book, I just finished it on audiobook and I loved it! Im always a sucker for Sherlock stories and this one was a solid 4/5. :-)
Finished this tonight while walking. I loved it last year but only gave it 4 stars at that time. This series has remained a favorite since then, & I loved the audio version. The characters are so fun, love the time period, Charlotte‘s love of cake, & her relationships (esp w/ Ash). Will prob listen to the other 2 next.
It was supposed to rain today. I was unmotivated most of the day to go walk, & then didn‘t want to go before meeting some church friends for dinner (too muggy & sweaty). So, of course, it started raining at dinner. I decided to try a late walk after & managed to get 30 min in between storms. #BFCr2 2/4 walks. Hoping to get in longer walks the rest of the week. Enjoying the audiobook version of lady Sherlock series.
I was at a library book club last week, and the librarians were talking about summer reads. They suggested this series, & I wanted to read it again. I have the series on kindle but decided to do audio. 3 of my favorite books from last yr, & I‘m very excited for the 4th to come out.
I've been reading faster than I can update my social media (23 books in May! That is a new record for me!), so I started a new blog just for reviews of everything I've been reading. A new, full length review goes up at least 3x a week, and I cover everything from YA to nonfiction, adult, mysteries, some kid lit, new releases, back list books, and more.
Whew! I survived my first weekend of dry camping! 🎉
Those “33 flights” were actually just walking around our campsite, which was at 9,000 ft. Everything seems hard at that elevation. 🤪 Taking down a tent/packing everything up in 30 mph winds made for a good workout!
Didn‘t do a lot of reading, but did do a little audio listening when the wind kept me up! Hopefully will still hit 3 books this week.

I'm a sucker for a Sherlock retelling. This one was hovering at three stars for a while - the supporting characters were a bit bland - but then, the twist at the end! Mercy. #boutofbooks
A retelling of a classic - #pop19
I was really confused at the beginning and thought I wasn‘t following the story - turns out I was and a key bit of information that would have been really helpful early on was left until the end to divulge. I‘m undecided on whether I‘ll continue with the series. If I do, it won‘t be on audio - there was simply too much going on for me to keep it all straight.
1. Alone time
2. Childcare for a fundi church during services
3. I haven't DNF'd a book in years.
4. I don't really read thrillers, but Nightwoods by Frazier was kind of a thriller. I'm really enjoying the Lady Sherlock series. Tagged first book.
5. I'm pretty sure everyone else has done this by now.
I can only say that I semi-read this #audiobook, as I kept falling asleep and having to go back to the place where I had dozed off. It was great for distracting my active mind so that I could sleep, and I caught enough of the story to be able to move on to the next in the series. Books serve many needs for their readers!
I couldn‘t find a picture of the book lol but this was so good !!! I ended up really really enjoying it. Can‘t wait to read the next in the series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Review in my blog: https://thegrumpybibliophile.blogspot.com/2019/01/review-study-in-scarlet-women....
I didn‘t love it but t did keep my interest enough to want to read the next book in the series.
So I might have been wrong about my last post.... I left that book in my car so I‘m starting this one now too 😂 Anyone else bad about starting multiple books at once? I can‘t help myself sometimes. I love Sherlock Holmes though so I‘m interested to see how this adaption stands up.
My second read of the new year and my first for #newyearwhodis I haven‘t read a mystery in years but I‘ve always enjoyed a good Sherlock Holmes one. But imagine if Sherlock was actually Charlotte Holmes, an upper class daughter who is suddeny a societal pariah, and Watson was actually Mrs. Watson, a lady who takes her in? This was fun, thanks to @ElenaBaer for putting it on the list and @monalyisha for the challenge!
It‘s a really good thing I have commute reads on audio because my actual reading is nonexistent at the moment. I liked this one but was a bit confused for a majority of the story about who was who. So many names to keep separate. I think actually seeing them in print might have helped. I did like how the book progressed and I loved Charlotte ❤️. 🕵🏻♀️🕵🏻♀️🕵🏻♀️🕵🏻♀️ 4 spy ladies for this one!
How fun! This book/author came up a lot during #rombklove so I decided to check it out. I've never been super into Sherlock so I don't have comparisons to make, but I think this version is delightful and feminist and socially aware. I'm going to read book 2 very soon.
I've never read Sherry Thomas before, any recs for her romance novels? I'm all ears.

Double shot cafe mocha, made with Starbucks Cocoa mix, pairs well with reading. I keep sneaking time with this one, it is such an engaging read. The way Charlotte Holmes is ahead of her time in her feminism reminds me of how Dr Who writers depict this time period. I am enioying a female Holmes as much as I enjoy the Thirteenth Doctor.
This is my final prompt to complete #readharder2018, and I'm reading the tagged book via #Overdrive to satisfy it. Good thing too, because after a lot of nonfiction, I was dying for an interesting fictional story. Loving it so far! Earlier in the year, I printed out the #readharder challenge out of curiosity, and discovered I had already unknowingly completed a third of the prompts with my normal reading, and decided to try to complete it. 😁👍📚
Now this is how you reimagine Sherlock Holmes. Charlotte‘s logic, planning...even when it backfires on her..., deduction, & just all around take no shit attitude is 💯. I can already see that this is going to be a series I will relish. I look forward to seeing how these characters develop & all the ways Lady Sherlock refuses to bend to the will of the times while solving all the mysteries that are just too much for the male brain.
🥧Intelligent writing style fits the time period; slightly pretentious at parts.
🥧Fat-phobic commentary occasionally.
🥧Intricate mystery kept me guessing.
🥧Separation between case & Sherlock‘s contributions for the first 3/4 of book.
🥧Progressed unnecessarily slower than expected.
🥧Difficult to connect w/most characters.
🥧Flat and one-dimensional.
🥧There are better written Sherlockian narratives out there.
A female Sherlock Holmes is not a new idea, but this one is very well done. It is a nice take on the mystery itself. However, the characters are the best part. They are well rounded without taking themselves too seriously. And tru...ish to the source, "Sherlock" has an addiction to a white powder, just not the same one. I really enjoyed this one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hello, Littens!! I‘m sorry for being rather invisible lately. I‘ve been prepping for a big life change: I‘m going back to uni!!! I‘m super excited to finally tackle this chapter of my life entirely for myself!! Now that it‘s all sorted out, I can get back to reading.
Check out my most recent library loot. Have y‘all read any of these, or are interested in them? Please lemme know! Wishing y‘all a beautiful weekend. Stay positive!! 💖💖
This sounded like everything that I should love (a woman Sherlock Holmes defying the sexist norms of Victorian society!), but I'm just having a very hard time focusing on it. I listened to like 3 hours and had no idea what was happening, so bail!
You know when people ending relationships say its not you its me? That‘s pretty much what happened with this book. My reading slump is very real right now and I‘m so sad that it had to happen when I got this book from Libby because I really wanted to devour it and love it but I just couldn‘t focus at all. So here‘s hoping that the slump goes away and next time I decide to try this book it actually works out!
