A Sentimental Journey and Other Writings
A Sentimental Journey and Other Writings | Laurence Sterne
4 posts | 2 read
'Love is nothing without feeling. And feeling is still less without love.' Celebrated in its own day as the progenitor of 'a school of sentimental writers', A Sentimental Journey (1768) has outlasted its many imitators because of the humour and mischievous eroticism that inform Mr Yorick's travels. Setting out to journey to France and Italy he gets little further than Lyons but finds much to appreciate, in contrast to contemporary travel writers whom Sterne satirizes in the figures of Smelfungus and Mundungus. A master of ambiguity and double entendre, Sterne is nevertheless as concerned as his peers with exploring the nature of virtue; unlike other writers of sentimental fiction Sterne insists on the inseparability of desire and feeling. This new edition includes a selection from The Sermons of Mr Yorick, which shed light on the concerns of the Journey, The Journal to Eliza, which records Sterne's feelings as he languishes for the company of Eliza Draper, and A Political Romance, the satire on a local ecclesiastical squabble that was the catalyst for Sterne's literary career. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

I ordered this book from one of my book swapping sites (Bookmooch.com) and didn‘t know what the book looked like but it was delivered today and happens to be an old (1926) hardcover copy. The person who sent it lived in Fargo North Dakota and the book is from the Fargo public library. I don‘t think it‘s worth much but I couldn‘t find an exact copy online but found a copy from 1926 different color cover that is worth $847.00.

EadieB This book is on the 1001 Books to read before you die list. 4y

TheAromaofBooks That's a lovely edition!! Does Bookmooch work like PaperbackSwap? 4y
EadieB @TheAromaofBooks Yes but they don't charge like paperbackswap does but there are not as many books or participants. Most of the participants seem to be from Europe so not many books available for US participants. 4y
TheAromaofBooks Interesting, I will definitely check it out!! 4y
EadieB @TheAromaofBooks I have about 850 books posted on Paperbackswap. I have mailed 500 books since January and I have more to post. After my books stop getting requested on Paperbackswap, then I move them over to Bookmooch and they go very fast over there. I am just interested in building up more credits on Paperbackswap as they have a better selection. I now have 1300 credits and 950 credits on Bookmooch. (edited) 4y
TheAromaofBooks Oh my gosh! I don't know how you keep up with that many books!!! I post mine on PBS for a while, but make periodic trips to Little Free Libraries and thrift shops to get rid of them if they are cluttering up too much space around the house, so my list is always getting cleared off haha 4y
EadieB @TheAromaofBooks I had 10,000 and then gave a lot away and probably have 5,000 now and my daughter and granddaughter will be living with us by the end of July so I'm in a hurry to get rid of as many as possible. I know it it crazy but then book people are crazy (about books!) 4y
TheAromaofBooks That is genuinely amazing. I will say that I have also discovered that if you go to a book's page here on Litsy, you can click and see who has it stacked To Read, so it's a fun way to give away books if you have some you just want out of the house!! Although I had someone else say she didn't see that option on some of the books she looked up, so it may not work on all of them?? 4y
EadieB @TheAromaofBooks I'll have to check that out but I have given books to Litsy members too! 4y
TheAromaofBooks Oh, I wasn't hinting that you should give them away (you already sent me an entire box of mysteries haha), more just that's one more way I've discovered to match books with people who want them!! 4y
EadieB @TheAromaofBooks I didn‘t take it as a hint. I just pay attention if people mention they would like to read one of my books and I send it to them. I forgot that I sent books to you. lol Too hard to remember everyone I have sent books. 4y
