Bleak House (Vintage Classics)
Bleak House (Vintage Classics) | Charles Dickens
One of Charles Dickens's most critically admired novels, this story of a monumental and life-consuming court case features one of his most vast and varied casts of colorful characters. In "Bleak House, " competing claims of love and inheritance--complicated by murder--have given rise to a costly and decades-long legal battle that one litigant refers to as "the family curse." The insidious London fog that rises from the river Thames and seeps into the very bones of the characters symbolizes the pervasive corruption of the legal system and the society that supports it, targets of Dickens's satirical wrath. Displaying Dickens's familiar panoramic sweep and brilliant characters--including the mysterious orphan Esther Summerson, her gentle guardian John Jarndyce, the haughty Lady Dedlock, and the scheming lawyer Mr. Tulkinghorn--the novel is also a bold experimental narrative that unforgettably dramatizes our most basic human conflicts.

4⭐️ Yay, I finished the book! It took me slightly more than 2 weeks, eventhough the Librivox audio is just around 40 hours 🙊 I wouldn‘t survive this without the audio, really. Story-wise, I was more invested at the start than at the end. I don‘t know, I guess I was expecting more fireworks. I still prefer David Copperfield to this.

Aimeesue Did you listen to the Mil Nicholson version? She‘s BRILLIANT and honestly the only reason I made it all the way through. I got so mad at all the things Dickens put poor Esther through! 😂 1w
sisilia @Aimeesue Yes! Mil Nicholson the saviour! Haha I know what you mean. I enjoyed the audio more than the story, I think. Her voice for Mr. Smallweed is amazing… such vicious shrill 🥶 1w

I must thank this lady Mil Nicholson for her brilliant reading of Bleak House. When I was in the first chapter I knew that I wouldn‘t survive reading this book if without the help of an audiobook. I searched online and my local library to find the voice that I like. I‘m lucky to find one https://youtu.be/uXt5OlPkAos?si=cljPizg3PBQE5BvQ Two days in, and I‘m already at 22%. That‘s pretty amazing, thanks to Mil.

RamsFan1963 I had to read Bleak House in college for an English Lit class. I wish audiobooks had been a thing back then, it would have greatly helped me trudge through that chunkster 4w

Just started this chunkster. I forgot how verbose Dickens is; he wrote one lengthy paragraph about the fog 😑😑😑 Luckily, I found an audiobook on youtube https://youtu.be/uXt5OlPkAos?si=bF0lunVhndkEEWxB Reading/listening combo works best for me

BarbaraBB For me too when it comes to Dickens. I liked this a lot by the way, with that ridiculous lawsuit of Jaundice vs Jaundice 😂 4w

Once again, life has gotten in the way, and I‘ve been really out of the loop on Litsy. Lots of big changes at my work and my husband and I are in the process of buying our first home. I‘ve been reading, but not staying up to date on posting reviews.

I first read this wonderful book on the recommendation of Cummings J, my ethics lecturer, shortly before starting my legal career. Fitting to revisit it as I finally exit. I would like to think the legal profession has improved, but there have been times during my 22 years when I was not so sure.
I agree with too many of Dickens‘ views to continue any longer. And so much happier to be out.
Beautifully read by Margolyes

High school is a great place to kill one's love for good literature, and I graduated thinking I will never read anything by Dickens ever again.
Well, it's been 16 years since high school, plenty of time to prove many of my other take aways wrong. Turns out Dickens was no exception. This book is a beast and I had a hard time putting it down! The narrative was so captivating! The wit and satire are both hilarious and illuminating. Highly recommend

282Mikado I have been thinking, it is interesting that she should have bought you this book now. The case of Jarndyce vs. Jarndyce may be eerily apropos for your current situation. Perhaps you should elevate this in your “to be read“, and I may need to add it to my “to be reread“. 2y

#FallTreasures #Day3 #Over500Pages

Two in-progress books that‘s are over 500 pages. I started Doctor Zhivago during lockdown in 2020; it was supposed to be a buddy read with my bf and roommate but they both gave up, and I started to wane about 30% into the book; I am still planning on finishing it eventually. I started Bleak House earlier this year; after an initial burst of reading, I have taken breaks and come back for a little bit at a time.

Pip2 I‘ve read Zhivago 20 years ago, wow time flys! I have not yet read Bleak House but it is in my to be read and currently collecting dust on my shelf. What do you think about it? Are you enjoying it? Currently I‘m reading Little Dorrit. Love this book. Dickens is a true master at his craft, he really makes the scene and characters come alive in this book! (edited) 3y

I have a hard time rating this book because it feels like two books. The third-person narrative section of the novel is slow, boring, too long. But Esther's first-person narrative is full of bonkers soap-opera melodrama, and I was into it. Oh and also, the way that one person died was a real wtf moment, so that was a bonus. What a crazy, weird book.

By chapter 40 we are aware of the threat Tulkinghorn poses to Lady Dedlock. Is he motivated by loyalty or something else? What did you think of Tulkinghorn and his demise?

Lcsmcat I think Tulkinghorn is motivated by personal power. Having something on Lady D that he could use later, when it would benefit him. 3y
BookwormAHN I wonder if that old saying "power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely" fits him perfectly. 3y
quietjenn I do think that there some twisted loyalty. I do think he wants to protect the family/Dedlock name. But if in doing so, he has power over Lady D. - who rivals him in influence - so much the better. In any case, not too sorry about his demise 🤷‍♀️ 3y
Butterfinger I honestly thought he was being loyal to Dedlock. He had a weird sense of it. Assuring Lady that he would let her know first. Why would anyone think that is a good idea or even gentlemenly? 3y

Charity and philanthropy feature in the novel both as something positive and not so. Dickens seems particularly critical of certain forms of charity. Why? #whattheDickens

Lucy_Anywhere I think Dickens is very critical of hypocrisy and those that ‘do good‘ only to look good to others. He‘s particularly cutting about ‘philanthropists‘ who are so busy writing letters and handing out pamphlets that they actually do no good at all 😂 3y
Lcsmcat I think Dickens is also critical of those whose charity is all for those far off, while ignoring (or actually contributing to) the problems and inequities right in their own society. 3y
See All 6 Comments
BookwormAHN I also think he's critical of how the poor are helped and differences between actually helping them and just lording over them. 3y
quietjenn Adding with these observations, I'd just add those who are so caught up in "doing good" that they neglect everything else in their life AND actually do no good at all because it's all performative. 3y
Butterfinger I agree with everything that has been said. That Jellyby woman was written as a caricature. She was foolish. But, then you have Jarndyce offer his home to Esther and the cop's children (forgive me, I know he wasn't a cop, but my brain is not working and I can't think of the family name). You know, as a reader, that his friends are becoming dependent on him. 3y

#whattheDickens There were many characters both main and side in this novel. Did you have favorites? Who did you like/admire? Was Esther the perfect “Victorian” woman? Who did you dislike? Why?

BookwormAHN I liked Esther but she could be a little too good at times. The Bagnets were extremely entertaining. 3y
Cuilin @BookwormAHN the Bagnets were some of my favorites too. I loved how he would ask his wife to tell everyone how he felt. 3y
See All 8 Comments
DarkMina @Cuilin That was too funny! I really liked the Bagnets too! 3y
Butterfinger I loved Mr. Jarndyce. He had nothing to gain for helping people. He was just a kind soul who Richard thought he could manipulate. I also liked how the Bagnets were kind and helped Me George get money for his shooting range. The Smallweeds, especially the grandfather was detestable to me. I loved Esther. She didn't change. Even when she was sick she put others ahead of herself. And Guppy's immature fickleness didn't daze her. 3y
Lcsmcat Mr. Jarndyce and Esther were both just a little too good, but lovable anyway. But Charley and Jo were favorites. Lady Dreadlock too pulled on my heart strings. She was in such a tough position. 3y
quietjenn I agree with much has been said. The Bagnets were great and the Smallweeds the worst. I did find Esther a little too perfect at times, but adored Jarndyce and really felt for Lady Dedlock. Really disliked Richard, but so keen on all the minor characters. 3y
Lucy_Anywhere I liked Esther but I did find her goodness a little annoying, especially as she kept putting herself down in comparison to others. Dickens was so good at creating characters - even the minor characters like the Snagsbys felt like real people! 3y

This book has everything. The writing, the characters, the drama, the satire, the mystery, oh and words, lots and lots of words, but when it‘s Dickens doling them out, I say bring ‘em! Gimme more! 😊 I only wish Esther had more agency and was a little less ‘good‘ but her central role in the novel told from a first person narrative definitely wins some points. Some characters were downright unlikeable - Smallweed and Richard - I thought him to be very selfish. I'm glad I read it. I can finally say I truly enjoyed a Dickens. Hopefully, I can say it with the third read of A Tale of Two Cities. #whatthedickens @Cuilin #chunksterchallenge2021 @Amiable

Amiable Great job! 3y
Cuilin Well done. Discussion at the end of the month. 🎉 3y

quietjenn @Ruthiella I always forget how much I adore him, but he's such a pleasure to sink into. 3y
quietjenn @LeahBergen thanks! It's a relatively new acquisition (Ikea!), but I'm enjoying it. 3y
Ruthiella Every time I read Dickens, I am reminded of how funny his novels are. For whatever reason, long term I remember the plots and tragedies but tend to forget the humor. (edited) 3y
BarbaraBB Of the few I read this is my favorite! 3y
quietjenn @ruthiella Yes, for sure! I think sometimes his reputation as a Classic Author Often Assigned works against him and it can be easier to recall the melodrama than the humor. 3y

We‘re on the home stretch! #whattheDickens Some have finished, some are still chugging along. I‘m preparing discussion questions for the end of April. It‘s also time to think about how we want to tackle A Tale of Two Cities. Would weekly goals/discussions be helpful? etc. Would love to hear your thoughts. Again I‘m tagging all who plan to read any C. D. with us. All are welcome to join at any time.

Lucy_Anywhere Argh, I‘m so behind! Fingers crossed that I can catch up a bit during my two-week break 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I read this one a few years ago, so I wasn‘t ready to re-read it, but I‘m looking forward to Tale of Two Cities! I like weekly check-in‘s, and/or end of the reading all together. I tend to do well with either of those. 3y

Lcsmcat I‘m OK with whatever works for the others, but I do like some sort of engagement during the course of the book. Even if that means spoiler tags for those who get ahead of the group. 😀 3y
Cuilin @Riveted_Reader_Melissa thanks for responding, I‘m thinking weekly check ins too. 3y
Cuilin @Lcsmcat I like the idea of spoiler tags for those who might be behind as I would like to be more engaged with everyone. For example Tulkinghorn!!! I so needed to talk about that!! 3y
KVanRead Love the idea of check-ins and spoiler tags. I‘m caught up to Ch. 50 and loving it!! Tulkinghorn! And Joe! This book is all the things. 3y
Kimberlone I am very behind but still optimistic that I can catch up this month and finish by the end of April! 3y
BookwormAHN I'm good with check ins either weekly or at the end. I'm also caught up to ch. 50 and am looking forward to finishing and discussing 😺 3y
quietjenn I am almost caught up (48, I think?). Really enjoying it! I do think it would be helpful to have check-ins or opportunities to chat about the book asking the way. 3y
Amiable I always tackle my chunksters in weekly batches, so I'm used to doing it that way. I'm good with weekly check-ins for ATORC. We're starting that on May 1, right? 3y
DarkMina Weekly check ins are good. I am caught up to chapter 50. 3y
CarolynM Oh dear, I'm so far behind! I'm going to recommit to my chunksters in April😬🙂 3y

I know we were supposed to stop at Chapter 50, but I couldn‘t stop. Sometimes (no spoilers) you just need a Dickensian ending with everything tied up neatly. Dickens has always been a favorite author and I look forward to further discussions with #whatthedickens, even though I didn‘t stick to the schedule. @Cuilin Now I can focus on my other #chunksterchallenge2021 - War and Peace. @Amiable

Amiable Yay! Congratulations on making it to the end! 🎊 3y
Cuilin Confession I‘m going to finish ahead of schedule. 😬 I‘m working on discussion questions. Congratulations. 🎉 Enjoy W&P, I didn‘t expect to love that one as much as I did. 3y
