Pickpick

I‘m going against the grain here and give this one a pick. I found the various myths and peppering in real life people (Jack the Ripper) to making this a different kinda read that I found appealing. #scarathlon #TeamMonsterMash @StayCurious

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Pretty ❤️🖤 2y
Read-y_Picker It took me several tries to get into this one, mainly because of the cast of super recognizable characters. I found it overwhelming but this time I sat down and just went with it instead of over analyzing or trying to keep a list. It was really well done. So intricate and what a whopper of an ending! 2y
KristiAhlers @Read-y_Picker right? I didn‘t realize when I went in that it was going to be like that so in this case it totally worked for me. I‘m always looking for a unique Vampyre story and this delivered! 2y
Read-y_Picker An endorsement from Neil Gaiman is not a thing to take lightly lol. Do you have plans to continue the series? 2y
KristiAhlers @Read-y_Picker I actually do. I thought it was good enough to continue 2y

The idea of bringing together all these characters from literature is fun but it really doesn‘t work for me here (especially since it also includes many real figures, which very rarely works for me in books). Plus, none of the characters held my interest at all.

1. Dark chocolate is better. Love Mint or Orange flavoured chocolate.
2. Cute spooky
3. Bookmarks and post it notes, but I've probably got enough, sorry!
4. Monsters - Frankenstein and Dracula, Witches - Bellatrix, Mcgonagall and Snape

...And then the one vampire woman who is like “I'm going wear pants and eat children because fuck society“ immediately gets brought low because a) there must've been something funny in those children b) she's too ditzy to remember she's allergic to sunlight. Penny and Genevieve should just runaway together. I know there's a whole series after this...but come on. More badass hookers, less dudes fighting all their battles for them.

Women in this never got a chance to stand up and get their own closure or revenge. Mary Jean (or Lucy) got 'fridged' to show the final descent of Jack's mind. You're telling me, that as the real Lucy's get Mary thought herself a weak little girl who can't fight back? Lucy was wild & fierce. Mary would be to0. Kim can rewrite an entire chapter of history but having a prostitute get off a few parting shots is too far fetched????

4/4 Totally written by a dude. None of the female characters were given any sort of chance to be full rounded. Genevieve is over 400 years old, with seniority over Dracula, and the author frequently called her 'the girl'. She also apparently can't win her own battles or take her own kill blows BECAUSE BEAUREGARD LITERALLY FINISHED ALL HER BATTLES FOR HER. He got the Chinese dude called off of her and he killed Jack for her.K, I'm not done yet...

(3/4) This felt so long. I feel like he sacrificed actual story to explore the impacts of vampirism as part of a society. While that was fascinating, I couldn't help but think CAN SOMETHING HAPPEN NOW!? Yes, there were some riots but they felt very sudden and we got kind of a bird's eye view and you didn't really care. You know the murder from literally chapter 1. The ending is sudden. No twists other than Dracula is actually really gross.

(2/4) The Good: Well, the premise is just brilliant. I love seeing some familiar characters in an entirely different situation. I always kinda rooted for Dracula in the original. What would happen to culture, economics, social niceties, fashion, etc. if vampires became not only the norm, but began to create an entire new class for society. The world building is fascinating.
Also, Genevieve is a BAMF.

Mehso-so

Let's talk about this, friends. I just...have such mixed feelings. So I'm going to go through THE GOOD, THE BAD, and THE UGLY. Overall, I'm happy I finished it and can cross it off the list....but then again, I'm really happy it's over.
