National Populism
National Populism: How Liberal Democracy Was Trumped (and What We Can Do about It) | Matthew Goodwin, Roger;Goodwin Eatwell
2 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
A crucial new guide to one of the most urgent political phenomena of our time: the rise of national populism Across the West, there is a rising tide of people who feel excluded, alienated from mainstream politics, and increasingly hostile towards minorities, immigrants and neo-liberal economics. Many of these voters are turning to national populist movements, which have begun to change the face of Western liberal democracy, from the United States to France, Austria to the UK. This radical turn, we are told, is a last howl of rage from an aging electorate on the verge of extinction. Their leaders are fascistic and their politics anti-democratic; their existence a side-show to liberal democracy. But this version of events, as Roger Eatwell and Matthew Goodwin show, could not be further from the truth. Written by two of the foremost experts on fascism and the rise of national populism, this lucid and deeply-researched book is a vital guide to our transformed political landscape. Challenging conventional wisdoms, Eatwell and Goodwin make a compelling case for serious, respectful engagement with the supporters and ideas of national populism - not least because it is a tide that won't be stemmed anytime soon.

YIKES.

I try to be open to books by people who disagree with me, I figure I‘ll learn something from them. But this ramble was barely dressed up as a history book and confused a patronising tone and including graphs with doing history. Apparently rising numbers of ‘non-british‘ children in London is the main reason brexit happened and Marine Le Pen raises ‘interesting concerns‘ about Muslims. I‘m genuinely confused this got published.

One of today‘s #kindledailydeal books in the uk is a good pick with our election just days away. I feel sick every time I think about boris and what he and his cronies have done to us, and what they will do. The fight isn‘t gonna end anytime soon in the uk, or the us or any of the many countries with leaders in the boris mould or worse. I‘m very tired pals. Keeping reading and educating and advocating where we can is all we can do I guess.

Freespirit I feel for you. I can only hope Boris is voted out. We have problems with poor leadership here in Australia too...can't believe people vote for such destructive leaders! 4y
DGRachel Seeing these waves of nationalist leaders voted into power across the globe makes me ill, but it also makes me wonder when the next round of violent revolutions is going to hit... 4y
