A Light in Dark Places
A Light in Dark Places | Jennifer Graves, Emily Clawson
1 post | 2 to read
In December, 2009, Susan Cox Powell was reported missing from her home in West Valley City, Utah. As law enforcement tried to piece together what had happened to Susan, her husband, Josh Powell, became the only person of interest in the case. For Jennifer Graves, Josh's sister, the nightmare started long before Susan's disappearance. From her experiences growing up in the Powell family to the terrifying moment when she first started to believe her brother was a killer, she relied on her faith to stay strong. She devoted herself to the safety of Susan's boys, Charlie and Braden, whom she hoped to be able to raise as her own. When the boys were murdered by their father in February, 2012, Jennifer was more than devastated, but she had to believe there was a reason for it all---including the deaths of her beloved nephews. In A Light In Dark Places, Jennifer shares her struggles and her triumphs. In coming to terms with such tragedy she finally was able to embrace the truth that we all have the power to choose our own path---and there is always hope, no matter how dark things may seem.

This book is written by the estranged sister of Josh Powell, one of the main characters in the #podcast Cold, a chilling podcast about a case gone cold. Josh‘s wife Susan disappeared one day and although everyone was sure he murdered her, he fooled the police and was never arrested. A few years later Josh killed their kids and himself. Will ever be known what happened to Susan? #PoorMisguidedFool #RedRoseSeptember

Cinfhen This sounds like something @Reviewsbylola would be interested in ...so sad 😔 5y
arlenefinnigan Sounds like a very tough read 5y

BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola It‘s such a sad story! Do you remember what book you read about Susan Powell? 5y
Lcsmcat I was living in Utah when this happened. He was slick, but even when he was on TV begging for the return of his wife something didn‘t add up. And the way he killed those poor boys! 5y
BarbaraBB @Lcsmcat It must have been all over the media in Utah at the time. Such a strange case with her suddenly missing And of course that ending. And oh, do you remember his father? What a family... 5y
BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola Thanks Stephanie! I‘m a bit obsessed by the case at the moment 🙈 5y
Lcsmcat @BarbaraBB Oh yes! It was all over the media. 5y
JaclynW Yes, this was a disturbing case. It was all over the local news. It seemed obvious from the beginning that Josh was guilty. I listened to the podcast too. Bone chilling. That family!! Steven Powell was looney! It was all such a sad situation. I actually had my teenage daughter listen to the podcast. I think it's important to talk about abusive relationships and what red flags are. 5y
BarbaraBB @JaclynW I had to think of you when I listened to this podcast. I thought you would know about it since you live in Utah. What a family indeed. Josh was scary. That Steve too - his diaries 😱. And Michael of course. I do hope the case will come to a close one day. It‘s a sad thought chances are high Susan will never be found. 5y
BarbaraBB @JaclynW Also - thanks for following my thread today! 5y
JaclynW @BarbaraBB You're welcome! I enjoy your posts! I've been missing lately due to school starting for my kids and all the busy that brings. Plus my 8 year old daughter had a friend/classmate die (hit by a car). Super sad situation that made it hard to focus/my focus became other things. 5y
JaclynW @BarbaraBB I'm holding out hope too that one day her body will be found. Bodies often turn up in the dessert or mountains. Everytime they find one, my first thought is Susan Powell. I kind of think Josh burned her body so that there would be no evidence. The entire time while listening to that podcast I was flabbergasted. Why couldn't they catch this guy?? Somehow he stayed one step ahead... 5y
BarbaraBB @JaclynW That is so sad, about your daughter‘s friend. A mothers worst nightmare. This must have hit you hard too. Wishing you lots of strength 🌹 5y
BarbaraBB @JaclynW And about Josh, it is such a pity they never arrested him. And he didn‘t seem overly concerned it the podcast / wire. I think indeed he made her disappear completely. 5y
JaclynW @BarbaraBB Definitely a worst nightmare scenario. I knew the boy well. I've worked a lot with him as I volunteer in the classrooms often. My heart is broken for the family. 5y
JaclynW @BarbaraBB Josh was super creepy. And totally guilty. I'm questioning the police work....or was Josh really that clever...what do you think? Did you listen to the entire podcast? 5y
BarbaraBB @JaclynW Yes I did and I do think the police should have put more pressure on him. Why didn‘t they ask him and the boys to take them to the place they went camping, for example? To me he didn‘t seem that smart. I‘d put some mental pressure om him but they stayed very pilote, never even asked him why he cleaned his whole house and minivan after being questioned. They were always a step behind him it seemed. Looking for the body instead of him... (edited) 5y
BarbaraBB @JaclynW ... making mistakes, which he did. And why didn‘t they really take the boys away from him and his creepy father? I feel frustrated by the case years after it happened. They let them all die without talking...! 5y
JaclynW @BarbaraBB YES!! Yes to all of that! My thoughts exactly! It's so aggravating!! They seem like obvious mistakes to me. But what do I know....I'm not a police officer! 😬😳🙄😔 Those poor innocent boys! That oldest boy knew something too I think. So many wasted opportunities.... 5y
BarbaraBB @JaclynW Yes, they should have spoken much more with the elders boy. It must have at least been possible to prove he lied!! Then again, when I heard the detective on the podcast he seemed very sincere. 5y
JaclynW @BarbaraBB Yes, I agree. I think police officers have a lot of red tape to get through before they can arrest and everything they gathered was just short of that. Unfortunately. I'm sure the officers involved were frustrated and were also convinced that Josh did it. That's the vibe I got from the podcast. I know laws are in place for a reason, but sometimes those same laws inacted to protect are the same ones that let guilty people go free. 5y
ljuliel Thanks for mentioning the book written about this. I haven‘t listened to this podcast but may do so now. The whole story is just so sad and frustrating . They‘ll probably never find poor Susan so her family can bury her. Those poor boys .. It makes me so angry that they didn‘t find a way to nail Josh before he took himself and the boys out all at once. Heartbreaking. (edited) 5y
BarbaraBB @ljuliel The podcast is very good. Heartbreaking too of course. And unbelievable. 5y
