Confession-I‘ve owned this book for around 20 yrs & hadn‘t read it. This felt like a really long book (my copy has small print & is about 640 pages). Not much seems to happen, it‘s a normal small village during a 4 year period. A rich American moves in to find his roots & build a hotel. He & his family impact the town in different ways. Interesting characters. Not my fave Binchy, but all her books are good.

cobwebmoth It was a bit abrupt. I was glad to see Patrick and his family finally leave after all of the chaos they created. 5y

Tove_Reads I didn‘t expect it. First I thought there must be some pages missing because I can‘t think of an ending to this in 3 pages. But, quite often in life something happens suddenly and you make decisions then and there. 5y

EadieB It was a bit abrupt but I think Maeve leaves all her stories that way as if to say the reader can think through the ending on their own. The hotel burned down and Patrick was going home. What more it there to say! 5y

cobwebmoth I think he treated her very poorly. He should have treated her with much more respect and concern. She sacrificed a lot for his family and he never really appreciated it. 5y

cobwebmoth Her whole world is different now. She was such a needed part of her family, but now she doesn't feel needed at all. It would be hard to try to have a positive mindset after all of that. 5y

EadieB Her predicament is sinking in now. I think she needs to accept the money from Patrick and try to make a better life. 5y

Andrew65 Such a sad aspect of the story. 😢 She needs a reason for waking up in the morning and a purpose to her life as she feels it‘s over. Hopefully she‘ll be better after the court case is over. @EadieB @cobwebmoth 5y

cobwebmoth Kerry is conniving and manipulative, so I think most of his actions are deliberate. I felt bad for Rachel. It put her in an awkward position that made her feel panicked. 5y

Andrew65 This was a very deliberate action the way I saw it. Certainly aimed at getting at Patrick and it will put the final nail in the coffin between Patrick and Rachel but felt that relationship was heading for the buffers at a fast rate. Rachel deserves better than Patrick with or without the evil Kerry! However Rachel did end up making a few bad decisions following this. @EadieB @cobwebmoth @Tove_Reads 5y

Tove_Reads He seems to be human. Sometimes he goes the extra mile, other times he treats people like shite. 5y

Andrew65 Patrick is a very interesting character. As indicated by @Tove_Reads he has his good sides but also has some negative points too. On balance like @cobwebmoth I don‘t like him but this was showing his nicer side and wanted Kate to get all she deserved. @EadieB 5y

I managed to read a large chunk (over half way through this 900 page book), and even though I want to read a bit more tonight, I think it's almost time to call it a night. cobwebmoth I wasn't sure, but I assumed it was for their monetary value. I thought that Patrick's reaction would have been harsher than it actually was. 5y

Andrew65 I also thought Patrick‘s reaction would have been much more severe, strange reaction from him about the card games, just encourage him to get even further into trouble. What was he thinking about! Had to be Kerry who had taken them, presumably because he needed money. 5y

EadieB I agree, I thought Kerry took the silver salvers because he had a debt to pay. Patrick should not help. He needs to discipline him and make him pay his own debts. (edited) 5y

Kate Ryan and her husband, John, have a pub in the Irish village of Mountfern. American millionaire Patrick O'Neill comes to town with an idea to build a hotel with a bar that could put a dent into the Ryan's business. I enjoy Maeve Binchy's books but I am not happy with the abrupt ending of this one. I will continue to read her books because I find the characters very entertaining. Highly recommend her books if you love to read about Ireland.

EadieB I think if is was possible they should provide some type of entertainment that would make the people want to come to their pub instead of the hotels. Or they could provide some unique service that doesn‘t interfere with other businesses in the community. Time to get creative and find a way to pull people in. 5y

Tove_Reads Just keep on going while at the same time listening to what people want. Big changes is not always the answer. 5y

cobwebmoth I think that's a very difficult question. There are so many variables and possibilities. I do agree that they should be observant and creative about whatever they do. 5y

EadieB I don‘t think it was right for Kate to hate Mary Donnelly but Mary was a reminder to Kate that she was unable to do her homemaking duties and made her feel inadequate so I can understand her feelings. (edited) 5y

EadieB I think Rachel was tired of being ignored by Patrick so she went home. After thinking about it, she realized that Patrick was under pressure to get the project done so she came back to Ireland. I was glad she came back as Kate really missed her. 5y

Tove_Reads Must be hard for someone like her to end up in a village, not being properly acknowledged and with Patrick having no time for her. 5y

cobwebmoth I think she made the right decision. I hoped that she would come back because I worried about how well Kate would fare without her. 5y

An enjoyable read with all the greatness of Maeve Binchy in it! A quaint Irish village with all its quirky inhabitants, as well as an American man with Irish roots, moving there with his two children to live the Irish dream. Things do not turn out to be so much fifty shades of green after all once the reader gets to know the village and it‘s people. The abrupt ending took me by surprise! Another good book by Binchy!

EadieB Sometimes with a major accident and bodily harm you have to sue in order to help pay for the hospital and medical bills. 5y

cobwebmoth This is where I have to suspend disbelief. I've been around bulldozers. There is no way you wouldn't notice one near you. That aside, the accident took me by surprise. It could be blamed on multiple people and no one. 5y

EadieB There are a number of reasons why Kerry took the money that I can think of: 1. He has a bit of the devil in him. 2. To impress his friends. 3. Drugs I think his father should make him pay the money back. (edited) 5y

Tove_Reads I was waiting for Patrick to do something really bad. I expected Kerry to do something stupid. I have lots of expectations 🤣 5y

cobwebmoth I don't know why Kerry took the money. He's a teenage boy so there could be a myriad of reasons for his actions. But I will now hate Patrick for the rest of the story. He uses violence and bullying to get whatever he wants, and shows no regard for how his actions will have long term effects on others. 5y

EadieB I think Fergus feels that Patrick‘s project will have an adverse affect on businesses in the community. Mainly, the Ryan pub and Kate‘s children will lose their inheritance. 5y

EadieB They seem like normal teenagers but they have more money than the others in the community which can affect people‘s opinions of them. Kerry seems troubled but Grace seems nice. 5y

Tove_Reads I have not warmed up to Kerry. A nice girl like Grace is usually one who ends up pregnant early or rebels in some weird way. She‘s just SO nice. 5y

cobwebmoth Kerry definitely has a strained relationship with his father. Grace seems sweet, but I think she is more perceptive than people think. 5y
