The Man Who Broke Into Auschwitz
The Man Who Broke Into Auschwitz: A True Story of World War II. | Denis Avey
7 posts | 8 read | 17 to read
The Man Who Broke into Auschwitz is the extraordinary true story of a British soldier who marched willingly into the concentration camp, Buna-Monowitz, known as Auschwitz III. In the summer of 1944, Denis Avey was being held in a British POW labour camp, E715, near Auschwitz III. He had heard of the brutality meted out to the prisoners there and he was determined to witness what he could. He hatched a plan to swap places with a Jewish inmate and smuggled himself into his sector of the camp. He spent the night there on two occasions and experienced at first-hand the cruelty of a place where slave workers, had been sentenced to death through labor. Astonishingly, he survived to witness the aftermath of the Death March where thousands of prisoners were murdered by the Nazis as the Soviet Army advanced. After his own long trek right across central Europe he was repatriated to Britain. For decades he couldn't bring himself to revisit the past that haunted his dreams, but now Denis Avey feels able to tell the full story--a tale as gripping as it is moving--which offers us a unique insight into the mind of an ordinary man whose moral and physical courage are almost beyond belief.

Bought this at a thrift store on a whim after reading the title. It was interesting to read and learn more about the authors life and experience. It told his whole life story, including being a POW and seeing many awful things. Hard to read about what he went through and others had it worse. Important to know more of what happened not all that long ago.

I'm not a great lover of non-fiction, I generally steer clear of it if I can help it. I've really struggled to pick up a book over the last year, especially during the last few months at home. That was until I found Denis Avey! Far from my usual read, I couldn't put this down from the moment I picked it up. It's a rollercoaster of a ride but it was worth page! It's an unbelievable, emotional, unpredictable account of one man's incredible journey.

💔😭 This book was heartbreaking, inspiring and truly an amazing read! Denis Avey was in a POW work camp near Auschwitz and working along Jewish prisoners from the camp. He wanted to see what it was like inside so decided to switch places with a prisoner so he could spend a night in Auschwitz...more than once! He was able to help other prisoners, sometimes risking his own life if he had been caught. Heartbreaking, but an inspiring read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

#SetInEasternEurope #photoadaynov16
I didn't think I had any books set in Eastern Europe because my geography knowledge is appallingly poor. My husband had to tell me where Auschwitz was. I have read this, honestly.
