Willowdean is irrepressible and my hero! This book is funny, angsty, and just great.
Got to listen to these awesome people talk about their publishing journeys and writing experiences this morning

I was about a quarter into listening to Dumplin', wondering why the story seemed so familiar, when I realized I'd seen the movie! The novel is a basic coming of age story, a teenaged girl that is fat pushes social barriers by competing in the town's beauty pageant. Along the way she struggles with relationships with friends, boys, her mom, and deals with the repercussions of her aunt's death.
Just finished watching the movie on Netflix while I paced the hallways. I managed to get in 12,500 steps already, so I might have a real shot at hitting the 100,000 during today‘s #LitsyWalkathon! 💪🏻 I really enjoyed the movie, and I‘ll definitely be reading the book soon. ♥️
Had a nerve-wracking and stressful day at work so am watching this book to movie adaptation! I loved the book so I hope the movie lives up to it.
Great YA story about self confidence and self esteem. The messages are straightforward, making them perfect for the target audience(and adults who are struggling and need it slammed in their face). Cute, funny, relatable and motivational. Great book. Can‘t wait to watch the TV show now
Nothing like some late night reading with some good laughs to end a day right 😂
While I don‘t share a body type with Willowdean, I‘ve also never been “willowy.” (And I could never pull off a pixie cut; that‘s a different issue, entirely, but also very upsetting.) In college, the excessively bro-y roommate of my Freshman Year boyfriend called me “thick but hot.” Or maybe it was “hot but thick.” I choose to believe that it was the former because it‘s slightly more complimentary. Whatever.
*Review/confessional cont‘d below👇🏻
I don't usually two read children's or young adult books back to back but I let my son choose my next read for me from my TBR stack. I was overwhelmed by choice. He didn't know anything about any of the books and didn't ask. I guess this just spoke to him. I'm sticking to his pick and so far so good.
For the first time in years, I read a book in one sitting. And it was this book.
I loved it, for several reasons. One was the mostly light-hearted first person narrative, but the main reason was that it was relatable. As a girl that's been fat all my life, as a girl who has even been too scared to do certain things because of how I look and how I thought I'd reflect on others, I totally understood Willowdean.
SO. MUCH. KISSING.
I‘m not mad about it. 😍😅
Can‘t wait to watch this on Netflix when I‘m done!
5/5 Stars. I‘m glad that authors are expanding and creating more plus-sized characters! This book was fantastic. It was easy to get into, and stay engaged in the story. (I would also recommend the movie! Although it doesn‘t stick to the plot 100%, it was still fantastic.)
“But I want what they have. I want a person to kiss hello.”
Near-universally relatable sentiment, I should think. The rest of this novel was less so to me. I probably would have liked it more when I was a teenager, but although I still do enjoy some YA, this book was a miss for me. The secondary characters felt underdeveloped and the protagonist too apologetic.
All the best things in my life have started with a Dolly Parton song.

Even though I thought Willowdean was kind of a bitch a lot of the time, I really enjoyed this and can‘t wait to see the movie! I especially loved the supporting characters, Amanda and Millie, so I‘m looking forward to the sequel. 4⭐️
I did not expect to love this book as much as I did. I loved Will and her insecurities, but yet not compromising on who she is. I loved her love of her best friend and how she fought for that friendship. And yet went beyond her comfort to form new friendships.
My main motivation for reading this was because I wanted to watch the Netflix movie. Now I am afraid watching the movie might spoil what I have created in my own head 😁
I didn't think I would enjoy this book. It started out pretty corny and I thought it was going to be a lost cause. But it got much better. It deals with self esteem, body shaming, love, friendship and a few other things thrown in. There are some lines that had me LOL for real. It is a great book for teen girls. I read this for the 2019 SWON TRC, which is in its last week.
I loved Will's character! She is the most badass, realistic teen character I think I have encountered yet in YA contemporary fiction. I really liked the fat representation, too - it was done in a real way without sugarcoating anything. The romance was cute and fun, but I liked that the friendship element of the story was really more important. This is definitely one more people should read!
This book was so fun and body positive. I loved it! Although I did find that I related more to the movie version of Willowdean than the book version. I'm not really sure why.
We can NOT contain our excitement about the newest episode of Unabridged, released yesterday. In this one, we take on the film adaptation of our March Book Club book, Dumplin'. Take a listen on your favorite podcast catcher and then let us know what YOU thought of this Netflix adaptation!
Willowdean is a pretty and confident fat girl, until she meets a boy she likes. And then she starts to have issues with her body. Meanwhile, she's also dealing with bereavement. Willowdean's struggles rang true, and I enjoyed her band of friends.
I liked this book, but didn't love it. The pacing seemed a little slow in the first half of the book, but that may be because I thought the book was primarily about Willowdean competing in the pageant.
This didn‘t turn out to be quite the comfort read I wanted it to be, but I still enjoyed it. Completely related to Willowdean‘s grief and the process of going through the things loved ones leave behind, but mostly just loved watching an unconventionally pretty young girl come to love herself and learn to accept love from others.
Yesterday, we released our newest Unabridged Book Club episode discussing Julie Murphy's Dumplin'. Take a listen and let us know what you think. Then, tune in next week to hear what we thought of the movie adaptation. And join us every Saturday in March to discuss both the book and its adaptation. We'd love to talk with you!
Dare I say it? I may have preferred the movie to the book in this case. Perhaps being forced to condense the material for visual release took care of some issues that detracted from the book. The story is good, overall; but some parts felt repetitive or unnecessary. I'm glad I read it even though I didn't love it.
