For older picture-book readers, this is the story of black cowboy George Fletcher, riding in the 1911 Pendleton Round-Up. The judges placed him second. The crowd believed he won.

The author‘s afterword gives more detail about the research she‘d done, areas that were unknown or contested events, and biographies of the main characters. Quite a few colloquialisms are in the text, and a glossary is included.

rockpools I‘m loving discovering so many diverse picture books, but I am getting frustrated at how US/Canada-based my list is given that I‘m in the UK. Not sure how different it would be if I could add the library‘s print titles into the mix - are we just a bit behind on ebooks (which is kind of fair enough, because you‘d normally want children‘s picture books as a physical thing) or is British children‘s publishing really this white? 4y
LibrarianRyan That is an interesting question I can‘t answer. 4y

eraderneely I think the UK is a bit notorious for how white children‘s publishing is. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/sep/19/whats-taking-so-long-childrens-boo... 4y
rockpools @eraderneely Thanks - I hadn‘t seen the stats there. I‘m finding more MG books as I go through, so my guess is it‘s even worse at the picture-book level. It‘s very sad! 4y
charl08 Wondered if you'd seen this list (although not exclusively UK). I love Ravi's Roar - bought it for a friend. https://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/blog/collections/diverse-voices-childrens-boo... 4y
charl08 Also lots here (UK based despite the .com )https://www.letterboxlibrary.com/ 4y
charl08 And I wondered what you thought of Nosy Crow as have found some books to gift to kids here (wanting their bookshelves to reflect them/ be diverse) https://nosycrow.com/books/ 4y
rockpools @charl08 Thank you! I knew Letterbox Library, but hadn‘t actually seen the other two. Hadn‘t realised just how much Nosy Crow had done! Been having a little more joy working through the BookTrust site as well. Loads to investigate here - Thank you 😊 4y
charl08 No worries - if you do twitter, Klovesbooks is worth a follow too - she is a primary english specialist at the uni where I work, and has a particular interest in diverse pubs. 4y
rockpools @charl08 Thank you - there‘s loads on her Twitter feed! You‘ve given me the push I needed to try harder - I‘d pretty much abandoned looking for more UK focused ones, but they obviously are out there. Just very well hidden!! 4y
rockpools Also tagging @eraderneely in case you want to take a look at any of the links Emily 👆🏻 4y
eraderneely Thanks! 4y

This picture book biography follows George Fletcher, a black cowboy growing up in the early 1900‘s. Growing up in Umatilla County, Oregon, Fletcher always wanted to ride in the rodeo. In 1911 he rode in the Pendleton Round-Up where his epic ride and subsequent (racist) shut-out earned him the title of “The People‘s Champion.”

This is a great story for elementary, but the display font is hard to read as text 🙄
