bookishkai I think you can have a healthy gay identity if most of your friends are straight, or if you‘re isolated in any way from the larger queer community. For me, my queer identity impacts everything from how I interact with the media I consume to the political issues important to me, to how I view history. I have a handful of local queer friends, and my access to the community where I live is seriously limited by accessibility (continued below) 5y
bookishkai The queer scene here takes place largely in bars, and I don‘t drink. It takes place in sports leagues. It takes place downtown, and doesn‘t seem like it makes space for middle aged dykes with disabilities or chronic illnesses. So while I don‘t feel especially a part of the queer community in Denver, I can look to things happening elsewhere and think “these are my people”. Being disconnected does not equal being disengaged. 5y
kgriffith @bookishkris this all makes a lot of sense and sounds very familiar, too. I haven‘t had this experience myself, but have heard from friends and read plenty of accounts of similar feelings of being disconnected from a community that doesn‘t seem to have a space for you. 5y

kgriffith @bookishkris And that isn‘t to say that I‘ve always felt like the community as a whole has been a good fit for me, but more that I have found my own tiny community within the larger whole and don‘t feel like I need more than my inner circle most of the time. 5y
Fridameetslucy I always feel a bit erased in straight gatherings and in my straight work place. Neutered. The NYC community is huge but like NYC can be impenetrable bc we are all so overworked and time gets limited. 5y
