Never Be Broken (D.I. Marnie Rome 6) | Sarah Hilary

Compulsive, gripping and dark, NEVER BE BROKEN is the stunning new novel in the Marnie Rome series, for fans of Peter James, Mark Billingham, and Val McDermid 'Deeply contemporary, painfully real, heartbreakingly good' Mick Herron 'DI Marnie Rome is a three-dimensional character of an emotional depth rarely encountered in the world of fictional cops' The Times Children are dying on London's streets. Frankie Reece, stabbed through the heart, outside a corner shop. Others recruited from care homes, picked up and exploited; passed like gifts between gangs. They are London's lost. Then Raphaela Belsham is killed. She's thirteen years old, her father is a man of influence, from a smart part of town. And she's white. Suddenly, the establishment is taking notice. DS Noah Jake is determined to handle Raphaela's case and Frankie's too. But he's facing his own turmoil, and it's becoming an obsession. DI Marnie Rome is worried, and she needs Noah on side. Because more children are disappearing, more are being killed by the day and the swelling tide of violence needs to be stemmed before it's too late. NEVER BE BROKEN is a stunning, intelligent and gripping novel which explores how the act of witness alters us, and reveals what lies beneath the veneer of a glittering city.

The author tackles some weighty & politically sensitive topics in the UK - knife crime, & safety of tower blocks after Grenfell. All the ingredients were there but I didn‘t feel engaged with it at all & this made it a bit of a slog to get through. 3⭐️

Thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Headline, for the opportunity to read an ARC. #NetGalley

This is a dark, gritty and supremely compelling story, with some truly tense moments. I felt it had an underlying message of forgiveness, grief and letting go and will touch your heart a little…..if only for Noah and Sol. This will stay with me for a long while and I would recommend you get a copy now…..

Not my favourite book in the series to date. Struggled to get into it and did restart it. Noah is struggling after the death of his brother and the case he is working in us triggering issues. The team as a whole try and protect him but at the same time there is s case to solve where children are dying. The book deals with drugs gangs and knife crime so important topics just feel there was something missing in the character depth
