New Animals | Pip Adam
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Carla, Sharon and Duey have worked in fashion for longer than they care to remember. For them, theres nothing new under the sun. Theyre Generation X: tired, cynical and sick of being used.Tommy, Cal and Kurt are millennials. Theyve come from nowhere, but with their monied families behind them theyre ready to remake fashion. They represent the new sincere, the anti-irony. Both generations are searching for a way out, an alternative to their messed-up reality.Pip Adams new novel walks the streets of Auckland city now, examining the fashion scene, intergenerational tension and modern life with an unflinching eye. From the wreckage and waste of the 21st century, new animals must emerge.

#weeklyforecast

Fingers crossed I can finish 600 pages of The Once and Future King so I‘m ready to start the Proust readalong in February. I also want to read Interpreter of Maladies and pick up The New Animals, a book my husband bought me (but as I didn‘t ask for it and it hasn‘t had good reviews on here I‘m feeling dubious about it!)
#hiselderliness didn‘t get any new books this week but he‘s currently chowing through ⬇️

Centique ...West with the Night by Beryl Markham. Extra photo is from North Head - a headland to Aucklands inner harbour that has a whole lot of tunnels and fortifications from WW1 and 2. 4y
Cinfhen The book your husband choose has a gorgeous cover and interesting premise/ I wouldn‘t rule it out too quickly 🤞🏽🤞🏽 4y
Centique @Cinfhen the good thing about low expectations is you can get pleasantly surprised! 4y

Centique @CarolynM yay! So many ppl I know rate it as a 5 star read 🤩 4y
TrishB I really enjoyed the Beryl Markham book 👍🏻 4y
Centique @TrishB I‘m going to need a Year of Nonfiction so I can read a whole lot of things he has read! 4y
TrishB There is no way I could do a year of NF! 4y
merelybookish Are you enjoying Once and Future King? 4y
merelybookish Also ditto @TrishB on a year of NF! 4y
Reggie I laughed reading the only review on here for the New Animal book. Good luck with it! (edited) 4y
Centique @TrishB @merelybookish oh for sure, I couldn‘t do that either! Id be so miserable without fiction 😭 I kinda have a theme each year that I read twenty or so books for - I think I‘ll make that theme next year non fiction and catch up with some of dads favourites. 4y
Centique @merelybookish I am both loving it and struggling through it (If that makes any sense) I think I‘m getting into a better rhythm now that I‘m reading it in larger chunks. 4y
Centique @Reggie exactly! 😂😂😂 4y
merelybookish @Centique I understand! I read it broken up into the different books and definitely preferred some sections over.others. But I also felt totally swept up in it and was sad when it was over. 4y
Centique @merelybookish now that I‘m into the Lancelot section I‘m really enjoying it 😍 4y
merelybookish @Centique Yes! I loved that section too! Also was surprised that Lancelot in this version is homely. 4y

⭐️⭐️

I had been warned the last third of the book was a little different from the first part of the novel. However, I wasn't prepared for a perfectly ok story about Auckland hairdressers to just end with no resolution and a weird Waterworld inspired short story to appear in it's place. Did the author lose the entire last section of her novel in some unfortunate mishap ?
As a reader I was utterly at sea ( haha !).
