This Bridge Will Not Be Gray
This Bridge Will Not Be Gray | Dave Eggers
5 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
One of "Publishers Weekly"'s Best Picture Books of 2015. The Golden Gate Bridge is the most famous bridge in the world. It is also, not entirely coincidentally, the world s first bright-orange bridge. But it wasn t supposed to be that way. In this book, fellow bridge-lovers Dave Eggers and Tucker Nichols tell the story of how it happenedhow a bridge that some people wanted to be red and white, and some people wanted to be yellow and black, and most people wanted simply to be gray, instead became, thanks to the vision and stick-to-itiveness of a few peculiar architects, one of the most memorable man-made objects ever created. Told with playful paper cut-outs and irresistible prose, "This Bridge Will Not Be Gray" is a joyful history lesson in picture-book forma gorgeously crafted story that teaches us how beauty and inspiration tend to come from the most unexpected places. Sometimes you have to fight for what you believe in, even if it s just a color."

Pickpick

Today we enjoyed walking the Golden Gate Bridge, but yesterday I read this children's book about the bridge and laughed out loud. It was such a great story, and I'm glad for a little history first.

athorne I miss the Bay Area, but I do not ever want to live there again. 8y
BooksForEmpathy My home! Hi San Francisco from Seoul right now. @EMJenkinson so curious as to why you wouldn't want to live there again!? I absolutely adore living there. 8y
athorne @BooksForEmpathy I'm a small town girl from Arkansas. It was just too big, too crowded. 8y

BookInMyHands @BooksForEmpathy We had a fantastic visit- we visited Union Square, Chinatown, City Lights Books (twice) Fisherman's Wharf, the Letterform Archive, Book Club of California, San Francisco Center for the Book, walked the Golden Gate Bridge, toured The Museum of Modern Art, had pizza in Little Italy at Tony's Pizza Nepoletana and the Jack Kerouac at Vesuvio's. 8y
BookInMyHands @EMJenkinson I'm a small town girl too. I like to visit, but long term I don't do well with large crowds. 8y
athorne @BookInMyHands XD I never got used to coming up out of the BART to vertigo. XD 8y

I could find books by Michael Chesterin the Litsy SB, but not this one, so chose Dave Eggers. ❤️I grew up in San Francisco and being close to the ocean is what I miss most since moving to the mountains. The photos on either side of the book in this picture were my grandfather's salmon fishing boats in the 1950s #booksbythesea #somethingforsept #septphotochallenge

maximoffs Would you suggest this book be added to the database? That way I can go through and add it so you can tag to your hearts desire ❤️ 8y
RealLifeReading Lovely post! I live in the East Bay and recently read the Eggers book with my kids. 8y
ApoptyGina69 @steverogers ill be back home this weekend and will revisit it. I took all my September photo challenge pix before I left for Mexico. Thanks for the offer. I will let you know! 🌁 8y
ApoptyGina69 @RealLifeReading thank you! Just had lunch in San Miguel with some old-time press people originally from SF and had fun talking about restaurants of "yore" (1980s!) 8y

This isn't book-related, but I haven't had much time to read because I've been seeing some amazing sites this weekend!
