Mehso-so

I bought this because it is *beautiful* and I know my mom lives this series... But page 1 and BAM, whaaaaa?? And you know, it doesn‘t get better from there. Mom says, “rabbit pie was a good thing to eat back then!” Uh, whaaaa? But it remains beautiful. Idk, ⭐️⭐️⭐️?

Also — received #sffs premier-size pkg from @Chili ! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 yay!! Can‘t wait til 4/18! 💃🏽♥️

LibrarianRyan My grandfather use to make rabbit pie. It‘s a bit gamey but if it‘s cooked right. 🤨 5y
Chrys Lol, I have a copy of Peter Rabbit tales that my mom used to read to us as kids, I had forgotten about the pie. I really need to do a reread 5y
Avanders @LibrarianRyan lol I have no doubt that it was and probably still can be good... I was just... a bit 😟 at the casual pass-off about the father-of-the-main-character-in-a-children-book‘s fate being at the center of one such pie 😆 5y

Avanders @Chrys it‘s amazing what we can find in these older books! 😆 5y
GingerAntics That‘s gross. 5y
Crazeedi We ate rabbit when I was a little, my dad would go hunting... 5y
SleepyDragon Haven't read the books, but my kids watch the cartoon based in it. One time when it was on I asked my husband if rabbit pie was a thing, and he just shrugged. Lol 5y
BethM I remember my mom reading this and me being freaked out. 5y
Avanders @GingerAntics @BethM lol it‘s so weird to have put it in a children‘s book! But I think a lot of older children‘s books are a lot... darker than what we‘re used to those days 😁 @Crazeedi @SleepyDragon lol it‘s not really the fact of rabbit stew that was so disturbing.. just that the thought that the mother refers to the killing and eating of the main character‘s father as an “accident” so flippantly 🤭 I think it just took me by surprise 😁😜 5y
GingerAntics lol I‘ll give you that. I think I read somewhere once that children‘s stories have long been the way children come to understand the world around them, most especially the dangers and pain of the world. Now, we shelter our children from that, but previous generations couldn‘t afford to do that. Tell the kids to stay out of the woods, they want to discover why. Tell kids there is a monster waiting to get them in the woods, they stay out. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
Avanders @GingerAntics interesting — it makes sense though! Both that that‘s how they‘ve learned of such things and that we now try to shelter them from it all 😳 Interesting to think about necessity being the bases for these stories.. 🥺 I‘m not sure it *is* better for kids to be sheltered like they are these days... but as a relatively new mom, I can tell you it *feels* better to shelter them 😜 5y
GingerAntics I read that children‘s stories were how kids safely encountered death, bad people, and dangerous situations. It‘s probably not “better”, but then we live in different times with different protections, so in a way it‘s not all entirely necessary either. If you read Grimm‘s original fairytales they are pretty grim. Some (dare I say many) of those dangers don‘t exist anymore, so it is a balancing act in modern time‘s. 5y
GingerAntics I‘d say when it comes to it, you‘re probably not going to keep your 5 year old from meeting other kids with different backgrounds or prevent your 9 year old from reading Harry Potter or things like that. I think HP plays a very similar role for modern kids that fairytales once played. Some sheltering isn‘t bad. Too much is a problem. I think we let kids be kids more than used to be the case, by a long shot. 5y
Avanders @GingerAntics very true! And I used to love the original Grimms.. maybe there‘s something to it 😉 And yeah — I agree re the HPs of the world.. maybe we just start a little later. That being said, I started reading Stephen King at 8... 🤷🏽‍♀️ 5y
GingerAntics DAMN!!! You definitely were not afraid of anything. I‘m impressed. I think kids generally do like the original Grimm‘s because they don‘t dumb things down or talk down to kids. Not sure when that started, but we need to stop that. (edited) 5y
Avanders @GingerAntics 😆😆 I was a crazy kid... I agree! Dumbing things down for no reason never helped anyone! 5y
GingerAntics It really doesn‘t. I think that‘s how we end up with dumb adults, and kids are totally aware of when they‘re being talked down to or having their intelligence insulted. After reading Little Big Minds, I honestly believe kids are all geniuses, but we keep telling them to “grow up” so they lose it. I was a weird kid, too. I used to love watching 20/20 and Dateline when I was 8 or 9 years old. 5y
GingerAntics By 8 or 9 I could also question how my grandmother said people were born gay, but god didn‘t approve. I also knew that when she said “don‘t be ridiculous” I was making her uncomfortable and question her biases with my questions. I think not dumbing things down really makes kids think in beautiful, wonderful ways. Maybe she came to regret refusing to read children‘s books to me by that point. lol (edited) 5y
Avanders Huh — I‘ll have to check out that book! That‘s why we‘re all here on Litsy... great minds and all that 😁😘 5y
GingerAntics You‘ve got little ones, you‘ll love that book. Even if they‘re still really little, you can look forward to awesome dinner table conversations with your little ones. I want to borrow everyone‘s kids after that. I need to hurry up and have some kids. lol 5y
Avanders Lol well.. conversations w my 2 yo aren‘t *quite* coherent yet 😆 But soon!! And then I‘ll send him your way to chat w ya 😁 Ya know, they can be a lot of fun and really good for cuddles on a rainy day 🤗🤗 5y
