Talk Me from the Ledge
Talk Me from the Ledge: Secrets from the World of Abuse | DeEtta Miller
1 post
Most of us have met a survivor of abuse at some point in our lives. Whether they were a stranger, neighbor, co-worker, or even someone we love, we are everywhere. We hide our fading bruises from the world, and often times even defend our attackers' actions. It's not that we are weak and the question "why don't they just leave" can only be answered by the individual victim. The answers are usually very complicated and personal. My secret world of abuse was harsh, lonely and humiliating. I was afraid of the ramifications connected to "telling all." Would I be believed? Will it even matter to anyone if they knew? I would have been severely punished by the abuser I exposed. That was my greatest fear. Six months after the sudden death of my mother I broke the silence of my past. In the late hours of another sleepless night the dynamics of abuse in the 1950's and 1960's is recalled and chronicled. With pen in hand, coffee cup at my side, memories and tears poured on to paper. By dawn the door was opened. Few were allowed to enter my childhood home. We wanted no witnesses. I was a good liar, and could hide the truth from everyone. Not anymore. I believe the courage to tell these stories came from a love that resonates even after death. With that love and a desire to offer a glimpse into the life of a survivor, I am opening the door to my childhood and inviting you to come into my secret world and be my witness.

I have been offered a free Shih Tzu puppy. Still with his parents, but ready for a new home soon. Am I nuts? I‘m 66, do I want a puppy? Can I afford a dog? Will Tink go nuts? HELP!

Kaye He‘s cute. I‘d say it depends on your level of energy as I think pups take a lot of work to train and take walks with etc. I‘ve never owned a dog but I think a cat would be less maintenance. If you like the pup then get it. I don‘t want to talk you out of it. 5y
Savedbygrace We had a Shih Tzu dog a few years ago and it was simply the sweetest! 5y
Tamra It‘s not a large breed, so it won‘t be difficult to walk on a leash. 5y

BookNerd9906 Should we answer based on cuteness or practicalness? 5y
Redwritinghood He is seriously cute, though. 5y
LeahBergen Yes! Do it!! 5y
britt_brooke They‘re such great company! 💚 I miss my dog so much. 5y
Suzze @BookNerd9906 I have miss Cute sitting on my right shoulder, and Miss Practical on the left. 5y
BookishMarginalia How cute is that? I say yes. 5y
JoScho I say absolutely! Dogs bring such joy to your life! Plus he is adorable! (edited) 5y
Birdsong28 Do it!!! It will transform your life in a very good way and he is so cute 😍😍😍📚📖 5y
Lreads I know he‘s super cute and I hate to be the Debbie Downer of the group but I would consider how this will affect Tink and your relationship with her. Please no one hate me! 🤔 5y
Suzze @QuietlyLaura I‘m definitely thinking about Tink. My sister comes to stay with her dog for a couple of months and is fine with him, so I‘m not to worried about that. But if puppy wants to play a lot, I‘m sure Tink will seek asylum. It‘s one of the cons on my mental list. (edited) 5y
Lreads Oh good! My first thought upon seeing the pupper was “I want him!” 😍 5y
Hooked_on_books I successfully introduced a puppy about 6 months ago to my 2 older (9 years) dogs and she‘s been a great addition! I suggest an intro to Tink before saying yes to the puppy and prepare yourself for some high energy for a while if you go forward. 5y
Soubhiville Cute! Ship-tzus are generally an easy going and gentle breed. One thing to consider is grooming- they should be groomed every 4-6 weeks to keep the hair out of their eyes, nails trimmed, ears plucked and cleaned, and anal glands expressed (gross but important!). That‘s probably going to cost $45 to $60 each time, depending on where you live, how big he gets, and his temperament. Don‘t know if that matters in your choice... 5y
Soubhiville (I‘m a groomer, so I may suggest more regular appointments than others. More than 6 weeks tends to mean they get matted, which will cost you more and is uncomfortable for the pup.) 5y
ReadingsByTheC That face! 😍 5y
LibrarianRyan Yes. You want a puppy. Great companion and company. And oh so fluffy. 5y
SleepyDragon Expensive breed. My inlaws paid thousands for their puppy. 5y
minkyb Hard to turn that cuteness down. 5y
tracey38 Oh, how adorable! I hope it works out and you gain a great new reading companion. 💜 5y
Dragon He‘s lovely 💚 5y
Betty I was much older than 66 when Tibor joined us. 5y
Suzze @Betty How hard was it? Seems like so much work. What do you think your expenses were? 5y
Betty @Suzze snort! By expenses do you include all the books, shoes and clothes and linoleum he has chewed? Having him forces me to walk, which I wouldn‘t do otherwise 5y
