“If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures, sweep streets like Beethoven composed music, sweep streets like Leontyne Price sings before the Metropolitan Opera. Sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry.”

Each year, I introduce a new speech to Maya. This year we are talking about how if MLK, Jr. were still alive, he would probably not be admired by the general public the way he is now. That he was not well liked during his lifetime by those who fight against changing the status quo. Demanding America live up to its ideals is polarizing, and he was not a cuddly public figure. And we should pay attention to his whole legacy, not just one speech.

Emilymdxn This is a great thing to teach! 5y
mreads Last year at the super bow ( I think) a truck company used his dream speech for a commercial and someone dubbed over it his anti consumerism speech pretty awesome https://youtu.be/l_v1h6Zoi-Q 5y
ravenlee My friend is an elementary school librarian in a mostly black area. She told me the kids were complaining last week that all MLK ever talked about was his dreams - because the teachers use the same speech every year, the only time they talk about him at all. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 5y
