This is a story about a young girl, Nasreen. She has not spoken a word to anyone since her parents disappeared and her grandmother decides to enroll her in a secret school for girls. Her goal is to help Nasreen come out of her shell and open up and make friends. It is based on a true story and was published in 2009. I would recommend this story to upper elementary grades.

Nasreen‘s Secret School is a nonfiction book about a young girl who is growing up in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is being controlled by the Taliban. The girls were not allowed to do a lot of things such as go to school. However, Nasreen finds out about a secret school for girls and takes a big risk in going. This book is by Jeanette Winter. Her grandmother sneaks her to a school for girls that is hidden from the Afghan soldiers. She starts learning new things and wants to create a beautiful life for herself.

She had an education. Great read!

This is a true story from when the Taliban ruled Afghanistan and women had most of their rights taken away, including the right to an education. This is not a happy book, but rather a story of what you sometimes have to do to cope with the atrocities of life.

The true story of Nasreen, whose name has been changed to protect her. Under Taliban rule in Afghanistan Nasreen‘s parents go missing. She retreats inside herself & stops speaking. Her grandmother has heard of a secret school for girls & sends her. Even though she is afraid the soldiers will discover the school, she wants Nasreen to have the opportunity to learn just like she had. School brings Nasreen back to herself & she starts talking again.

I got carried away reserving #bannedbooks at my library. Some of them, including this one, were children's books. This one is a true story about a little girl in Afghanistan whose Father was taken by soldiers and is left with her grandma when her mother goes in search of him. She refuses to speak until she meets a friend at a secret school that is being run for girls. Quite interesting and I would not think twice about letting a child read it.

I'm making my way through the ALA's top 10 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 2015. This picture book is a wonderful story of the resilience of women under Taliban rule. Reasons for Challenges: Religious viewpoint, unsuited for age group, and violence.
