Drug Warrior
Drug Warrior: Inside the Hunt for El Chapo and the Rise of America's Opioid Crisis | Jack Riley
3 posts | 3 read
DEA Agent Jack Riley, "[Chicago's] most famous federal agent since the days of The Untouchables" (-Rolling Stone) tells the inside story of his 30-year hunt for the drug kingpin known as El Chapo, and reveals the true causes of the American opioid epidemic. Jack Riley, grandson of a Chicago cop known for his fists, was born to be a drug warrior. Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán Loera, who farmed marijuana and opium poppies as a teenager in Mexico, was born to be a drug lord. Their worlds collided when Riley, a career special agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration, was promoted to lead the fight against Chapo on the border at El Paso. Drug Warrior tracks Jack Riley's rise from an undercover street agent to the hard-charging DEA boss who oversaw the international hunt for the world's most wanted druglord. Riley takes readers behind the scenes during his years tracking drug runners in El Paso, leading the fight against cartel gangs in Chicago, and finally navigating the shark-infested waters of Washington, D.C., where as second in command at the DEA he oversaw every major mission to capture foreign drug kingpins in the past 30 years. In the end, Riley achieves his greatest victory and Chapo faces his darkest fear when he's extradited to face U.S. justice. A fascinating memoir of life inside the drug wars, Drug Warrior is also a unique perspective on how druglords like El Chapo helped fuel Americans' dependence on opioids and heroin, and the critical need for America to be thinking strategically about the opioid epidemic going forward.

There was a lot of interesting information in this book but the author is so relentlessly self-righteous that one develops sympathy for El Chapo! He doesn‘t deal with some of the obvious contradictions in his arguments but he is very knowledgeable. I had hoped for better.

This is an action packed memoir of a brave, courageous man, who sacrificed so much to make our country safer for us all, esp now when our country lacks leadership and intelligence, hIs dedication is commendable. A modern day hero.
