The Silk Road
The Silk Road: A Novel | Kathryn Davis
5 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
A spellbinding novel about transience and mortality, by one of the most original voices in American literature The Silk Road begins on a mat in yoga class, deep within a labyrinth on a settlement somewhere in the icy north, under the canny guidance of Jee Moon. When someone fails to rise from corpse pose, the Astronomer, the Archivist, the Botanist, the Keeper, the Topologist, the Geographer, the Iceman, and the Cook remember the paths that brought them therepaths on which they still seem to be traveling. The Silk Road also begins in rivalrous skirmishing for favor, in the protected Eden of childhood, and it ends in the harrowing democracy of mortality, in sickness and loss and death. Kathryn Daviss sleight of hand brings the past, present, and future forward into brilliant coexistence; in an endlessly shifting landscape, her characters make their way through ruptures, grief, and apocalypse, from existence to nonexistence, from embodiment to pure spirit. Since the beginning of her extraordinary career, Davis has been fascinated by journeys. Her books have been shaped around road trips, walking tours, hegiras, exiles; and now, in this triumphant novel, a pilgrimage. The Silk Road is her most explicitly allegorical novel and also her most profound vehicle; supple and mesmerizing, the journey here is not undertaken by a single protagonist but by a community of separate soulsa family, a yoga class, a generation. Its revelations are ravishing and desolating.

Mehso-so

This would be a pan for me, except there were a few lines that we're breathtakingly beautiful or poignant. But the multiple planes and time frames simultaneously overlapping with so many esoteric plot lines made this more work to follow than it gave in results

As so often happened when we came face to face with the unexpected, our thoughts got loose from our brainpans, sending us straightaway to the place we thought we'd left behind forever.

The sky was dark but the darkness still had a sheet of light inside, the way a philosophic tenet is backed by intuition.

Panpan

This was an ARC tucked away in a Powell‘s Indiespensable subscription box. Someone needs to explain to me what I just read. I groaned and sighed repeatedly during the last half of the book.

I can‘t make heads or tails out of this book but I CAN say that this view from the hotel my son and I stayed at the other night in Yosemite was amazing. Yosemite Falls to the right, the moon setting to the left. A Christmas gift from another son. Much love to all Littens...enjoy your day.
