A Walk Through Paris
A Walk Through Paris | Eric Hazan
9 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
A walkers guide to Paris, taking us through its past, present and possible futures Eric Hazan, author of the acclaimed The Invention of Paris, leads us by the hand in this walk from Ivry to Saint-Denis, roughly following the meridian that divides Paris into east and west, and passing such familiar landmarks as the Luxembourg Gardens, the Pompidou Centre, the Gare du Nord and Montmartre, as well as little-known alleyways and arcades. Filled with historical anecdotes, geographical observations and literary references, Hazans walk guides us through an unknown Paris. He shows us how, through planning and modernisation, the citys revolutionary past has been erased in order to enforce a reactionary future; but by walking and observation, he shows us how we can regain our knowledge of the radical past of the city of Robespierre, the Commune, Sartre and the May 68 uprising. And by drawing on his own life story, as surgeon, publisher and social critic, Hazan vividly illustrates a radical life lived in the city of revolution.

This was really enjoyable holiday reading. It's not a travel guide - it's an account of a walk through Paris, but with radical history and Hazan's reflections on the architecture and general social situation intertwined. It's a little dry in style but he also has a dry sense of humour, and I find it quite endearing and amusing how much of a self-confessed curmudgeon he is.

We're off to Paris 2 weeks today. Any recommendations for literary/bookish stuff to check out?

Louise There are many famous writers, composers, and artists buried in the famous old Père Lachaise cemetery. Worth a visit! You might also try the café where many writers (Hemingway, et al.) used to meet and, of course, Shakespeare and Company. There‘s Maison de Balzac. . . and surely there will be something for Proust. Don‘t forget the charming open-air booksellers along the Seine. Please don‘t miss the Musée D‘Orsay or the Rodin Museum! Have fun! (edited) 5y
Ruthiella No literary tips but have a wonderful time !😀 5y

Day trip to Paris for our anniversary. Gorgeous, long lazy lunch in a beautiful bistro, a walk along the Seine and a trip to Shakespeare & Co. perfect! This is SUCH a treasure trove of an amazing bookshop. Connected rooms, with low beams, reading books and lots of wooden ladders on rails. ❤️❤️❤️
