Jill's Gymkhana | Ruby Ferguson

Jill has always wanted a pony and when Farmer Clay offers her a piebald at a knockdown price, she jumps at the offer. The author was a real pony fan and created the first ever series of pony books.

Vansa Oh my God,your post transported me back to my childhood!Jill and the perfect pony by Ruby Ferguson was one of my favourite books as a kid,I didn't know at all that it was a continuation!I must get hold of this.Sounds so lovely. Why were there so many horse books for girls back then?!Horse riding is a fairly niche activity,I would assume!I loved all of them, though I've probably set eyes on a horse barely twice in my life😂 2y
Vansa I would never have thought Jill had such a complicated backstory, she's such a competent horsewoman in Jill and the perfect pony! 2y
johncadams @Vansa As fans of pony stories we are so used to riders who are already experienced. I always felt that Jill was more accessible than some of the more capable riders we see in other books. I am so glad that my post sparked your response. I love reviewing and this is why! 2y
Vansa @johncadams very true! I really must get hold of this. 2y

More precious childhood memories here .... 🐎

At the age of about 7 or 8 I became pony mad and I devoured every pony book I could get my hands on. Ruby Ferguson's Jill series was a definite favourite. These copies are early 80s but I was shocked when I realised the first book was published 70 years ago!

Anyone else love pony books? What are your favourites?

Laura317 I was big into the Black Beauty books and the Misty of the Chincoteague books. That would‘ve been in the early to late 70s. I even pretended to be a horse at one time. Drove my mom crazy. 😂 6y
