Dutch Wife (Original)
Dutch Wife (Original) | Ellen Keith
A sweeping story of love and survival during World War IIAMSTERDAM, MAY 1943. As the tulips bloom and the Nazis tighten their grip across the city, the last signs of Dutch resistance are being swept away. Marijke de Graaf and her husband are arrested and deported to different concentration camps in Germany. Marijke is given a terrible choice: to suffer a slow death in the labor camp or--for a chance at survival--to join the camp brothel. On the other side of the barbed wire, SS officer Karl MYller arrives at the camp hoping to live up to his father's expectations of wartime glory. But faced with a brutal routine of overseeing executions and punishments, he longs for an escape. When he encounters the newly arrived Marijke, this meeting changes their lives forever. From the Netherlands to Germany to Argentina, The Dutch Wife is a novel about the blurred lines between love and lust, abuse and resistance, and right and wrong. It is a harrowing and ultimately redemptive story about the capacity of ordinary people to persevere under extraordinary circumstances.

In 2017/8 I read this an as ARC- it is an unusual book and quite dark, however it led to me to start to read about atrocities in Argentina that I knew next to nothing about and since Argentina is next up for #FOODANDLIT I thought I would share this. Many triggers, but it is a story that shows a side of both of these atrocities that reads real and when you research yourself you see it is a composite of truth for so many countless victims.

This novel follows the story of three separate individuals who all share something in common, they‘re involved in two of the most oppressive reigns of terror in modern history. It demonstrates the indifference between the good and evil, love and lust, and resistance and abuse. It also shows us how people can do unthinkable things in unimaginable circumstances. If you like books about historical war, this book is for you. The Dutch Wife is written

morgan.davidson in first person from each different character‘s point of view. It goes between the three different characters and their stories of how they survived the war. 3y

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it. Some will be old, some will be new - don't judge me, I have a lot of books.

Day 28th

Join the fun if you want!

3.5⭐️ I felt it was ok, as there was a lot I didn‘t understand. Will need to likely reread the book to get a better understanding of it. #bookclub #bookstagram #historicalfiction #fiction #2020 #bookreview

I read it fast and was interested throughout, but unfulfilled in the end. I found Luciano's perspective a sad forced note that facism is bad and that what goes around comes around in some cosmic way. I hurt for him, as he truely was the most innocent perspective of the novel. I found myself not loving Marojke in the end as much as I wanted to. It wasn't her ambiguity of feeling, but her lack of internal resolution that frustrated me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ /5

Switched my reading up for my last beach day. So far I'm pretty hooked, although I don't love stories with two none intersecting storylines. Maybe they will come together? #mexico #beachbook #historicalfiction

Every year a local friends of the library group has their used book sale. I take the day off of work and peruse the gymnasium full of tables, full of books. Here's this year's haul. Total value: $397.77. Total paid: $48. It's always a good day 😀

I had high expectations for this book but was slightly disappointed. Keith tells the story from three different perspectives but at the end of the book, I was left questioning the purpose of the third character 3/5 #historicalfiction

Great way to start the day! Has anyone else not taken the factory screen protector off their kobo? 🙈

Nute Such a cute mug! I never remove the factory screen covering from any device until I buy a screen protector. Yay...now I know that I'm not alone. 5y

This book is based on actual events. It combines 2 different stories from different time periods. I would have preferred just 1 story, the WWll story. I‘m sure politically there is a connection or common thread to the 1970‘s story based in Argentina but I am unaware of those facts. It bounces between 3 main characters. It was not a bad read and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

Currently reading this and I am unsure how I feel about it! It started off strong but now I‘m wondering... where is Keith going with the story? #historicalfiction

It had potential, but just fell flat. There was no character development, you were dropped right into the action with no background, and all the chapters except Luciano‘s did a lot more telling than showing. I wanted to know more about the Dirty War, more about what made Karl the way he was, and more resolution for the characters at the end. This gets a so-so because there were interesting parts and because of the Argentina angle.

I‘ve been contrary and grumpy all day, so of course I went through my entire kindle library before settling on this to read.

It‘s not going to be the happy read that I probably need right now, but I‘ve never been one for happy reads when I‘m feeling out of sorts. I go for comfort in books that will ruin me.
