“Reader, hang on for dear life. Sawkill Girls is a wild, gorgeous, and rich coming-of-age story about complicity, female camaraderie, and power.” —Sarah Gailey, author of River of Teeth “An eerie, atmospheric assertion of female strength.” —Mindy McGinnis, author of The Female of the Species Fans of Victoria Schwab, Nova Ren Suma, and Netflix’s hit show Stranger Things will crave this frightening stand-alone contemporary teen horror novel about three girls who take on an insidious monster that preys upon young women. Who are the Sawkill Girls? Marion: The newbie. Awkward and plain, steady and dependable. Weighed down by tragedy and hungry for love she’s sure she’ll never find. Zoey: The pariah. Luckless and lonely, hurting but hiding it. Aching with grief and dreaming of vanished girls. Maybe she’s broken—or maybe everyone else is. Val: The queen bee. Gorgeous and privileged, ruthless and regal. Words like silk and eyes like knives; a heart made of secrets and a mouth full of lies. Their stories come together on the island of Sawkill Rock, where gleaming horses graze in rolling pastures and cold waves crash against black cliffs. Where kids whisper the legend of an insidious monster at parties and around campfires. Where girls have been disappearing for decades, stolen away by a ravenous evil no one has dared to fight…until now.

Okay so I don't honestly think I've ever read a horror before. I also avoid horror films like a millennial dodging a student loan officer. I legitimately refused to go outside when the It remake movie came out. Okay. I HATE HORROR STUFF...AND CLOWNS...also, the world in 2019 is messed up enough for my taste.

That being said...I loved this book! I loved the mystery , romances, the hidden clan and monster. The LGBTQ+ rep was also fantastic!

Here‘s my #JuneWrapUp! 15 books finished this last month, with a few leading into July. The book that shone above the rest for me isn‘t just my #BestOfJune, it is also in the lead for my #BestOf2019, Sawkill Girls managed to hit all my sweet spots! It‘s got horror, romance, magic, Syfy, strong female friendship, and POC and LGBTQ+ rep, all blended beautifully in a well written story that I am sure I will be rereading again and again.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Looks like a great month of reading! 💖📖💖 3w
bullbunny I also read Carry On! And just finished Fangirl yesterday! Have read geekerella too! But a previous month. Carry On vs Fangirl which one did you like more?? 3w
ValkyrieAndHerBooks @bullbunny the first time I read them I liked Fangirl more, but this time around, I think Carry On is the champ! 3w
bullbunny @ValkyrieAndHerBooks okay understandable. Will reread it again when the sequel draws near 3w

3.5/5

While I didn‘t rate this at a 4 or 5, I‘d still give this one a solid “pick” status. It was different, I enjoyed the variety of characters and the story in general was well done.

This book obviously leans on being a young feminist book, to its detriment to a degree - there are sympathetic males but I rather hoped the ancient group of men who fight the monster had been clueless and not completely evil.

Tungstensmum Oh, and if you go for the Audiobook of this one, I definitely had some issues. The narrator tries too hard to do the “masculine” voices and somewhat fails - otherwise her voice was too musical and I found myself not focusing on the book and drifting away. I kept having to go back and listen to bits over and over again because I was getting so easily side tracked or dozing off! 3w

This book totally took me by surprise! A #Fantasy #Mystery & part #Horror story
What I love most are the characters, these 3 kickass strong girls who turned from enemies to allies and stood together to fight this monster & this stupid men only cult! I'm surprised to see the diversity of these characters (including biseual & asexual) and the writing was beyond any #YA I've read this year. A solid 4🌟/5

That was an awesome read! It's like Holly Black had a book baby with Grady Hendrix and raised it in a creepy mansion on the corner of Science Fiction and Fantasy. So disappointing. I've been a big fan of this author's middle grade books. This would have been a good story if not for all the "feminist" man- bashing meant to influence teens. Blech. Guess what? men aren't bad. Men aren't less. We shouldn't teach our daughters to think that.

rretzler I so absolutely agree with you! I don‘t like it when authors try to over-generalize or stereotype, especially in middle-grade or YA books 2mo

My TBR for the Magical Readathon #OWLsReadathon2019 I do have two books in here for one subject just because I‘m a fickle mood reader and have no idea which one I will want to read when the time comes. Some of these may be swapped out for graphic novels/ manga from the library depending on what I find.

I should love this book. It‘s got everything that usually makes me swoon: monsters, powerful girls, the utter destruction of misogynist assholes. Yet I remain firmly on my own two feet. I love that the characters are dynamic & complex (even some of the villains). I love the way everything culminates, ends, & begins again. The last chapters are nearly perfect. But it‘s overwritten (ex: “Stardust cares not for the agony of demons”) & way too long.

monalyisha I think this is my third #unpopularopinion in two days. I guess it‘s always possible I‘m just in a mood. 😅 4mo
monalyisha Also, Sawkill Rock totally reminds me of Cabeswater (Stiefvater, The Raven Cycle) but less cool. 4mo
madamereadsalot1 That cover is beautiful though! 4mo
See All 15 Comments
monalyisha @madamereadsalot1 I agree! 😍 4mo
WhatWouldJaneDo I felt similarly about this one. The characters were interesting but I never felt like the world building landed. It was ambitious but it just didn't come together for me 4mo
monalyisha @WhatWouldJaneDo Yes! And I felt like sometimes Legrand *knew* she was overwriting & there were little nods to that fact, but sometimes she had no idea... or maybe just didn‘t have the skillset to stop. Like you said, it was ambitious. I liked a bunch of her ideas... I think I just don‘t love her writing. 4mo
monalyisha @WhatWouldJaneDo I did really like the fact that so many characters ended on unsure footing with one another. I liked when Z & G listed all of the ways their relationship *might* go; I liked that Z told V she might never forgive her but still comforted her. The blurred nature of the ending is something I can absolutely get behind. 4mo
WhatWouldJaneDo @monalyisha agreed, even though the plot floundered for me as it developed the ending had some good points in terms of the relationships. I'll give her points for that since endings can be so difficult in horror/fantasy anyway and if you don't have a strong premise can just be a trainwreck. There was some growth without things being perfect/tied up with a bow. 4mo
ferskner YES. I kept thinking "WHY DON'T I LOVE THIS??" 4mo
monalyisha @WhatWouldJaneDo I was especially heartened when Z‘s dad recognized his organization as fanatical & distanced himself from them without a second thought. I loved the message that, yeah, there are real, singular monsters...but that the most horrific, harmful thing is the group mindset: “So it has been done, and so it is done, and so it shall be done.” 🤢 (edited) 4mo
monalyisha @ferskner I‘m chalking it up to writing chops. It makes me think that I might like her books eventually, once she hones her skills & matures as a writer. There‘s real potential. I imagine if she read that comment, it would sound condescending but I mean for it to be heartening, ultimately. 🙈 4mo
ferskner I can see that, but I also think it was more on the magical realism side of fantasy, and that's almost universally a pass for me. 4mo
monalyisha @ferskner Ohhh. See, that‘s my jam. So I was caught even more off-guard. 4mo
WhatWouldJaneDo @monalyisha yes! I really didn't care for the explanation of how the three girls' ritual would end up working (it seemed like a crap solution that probably had much better alternatives) but having it play out that way with that message brought it around a bit. It's been a few months since I read this so this conversation is stirring up specific details in my memory lol. 4mo
monalyisha @WhatWouldJaneDo Omg you‘re remembering way more than I‘m sure I will in about a week. 😆 I‘m impressed! 4mo

This book...gosh, it was fabulous! It's classified as YA horror, but I wouldn't go as far as saying it's horror. Maybe for some since there are some terribly creepy parts, but it was a dynamic thriller imo. The MCs are all female and gritty and wonderful! I definitely recommend it.

YA, fantasy, mystery, a bit of supernatural horror - this book was pretty much designed to fulfill the recommended daily allowance of all the literary nutrients my brain craves. From the writing style to the plot and characters, it was another of one those small alchemic miracles where the book and I were kindred from the start. Lyrical, gorgeous, and feminist, highly recommended!

I‘m having a hard time trying to decide if I enjoyed this book or not. Parts of it totally creeped me out and intrigued me. However, I found that I did not really like the characters. They annoyed me slightly. Especially, Zoey. I also didn‘t really enjoy the feminist message. While, I don‘t have an issue with feminist plots this one was contrived. All in all I did enjoy the read but I didn‘t gain much from the experience.
