Armchair time travel.

... the gorgeous gardens of Fez, with their fountains, pavilions, and fragrant flowers and fruit trees, are like "a terrestrial paradise"

Just picked up this historical biography of an ambassador from North Africa who was captured and presented to the Pope in 1518. He left writings detailing his travels across Africa, and beyond. I just read that diplomatic correspondence in Arabic was traditionally written in "sadj'" format, "without fixed meter, but with resonances, alliteration and occasional rhyme." Imagining current diplomats having to do this ?

arubabookwoman I read a novel by Amin Maalouf titled Leo Africanus a few years ago and it was fascinating. 4y
charl08 @arubabookwoman She's mentioned the book by Maalouf and I'm only about 50 pages in. I want to find a copy! 4y
