I enjoyed the second book of this duology even more than the first. In this one, Margaret George does a superlative job of humanising one of the most infamous figures in Roman history.

It's a lengthy book (almost 600 pages) & events move quite slowly as this is more about Nero the person & what could have led to his downfall. Recommended to readers who enjoy historical fiction full of rich detail. 5 🌟

Wow! What an excellent book for my first read of the New Year ! Margaret George has a way of really brining the past to life and this is one of her best. She paints a slightly different picture to that we all know about Nero - He‘s self absorbed and obsessive but not necessarily evil. Rome is bright to life as well, I feel like I could navigate the city from what I have read! And I got it for Christmas so it‘s book 1 of my #mounttbr attempt!

1) the final sunrise of 2018. I 😍 Northumberland 2) 72 books and at least 24 off my #mounttbr 3) I was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma in March after months of feeling grotty BUT I had a total response to treatment in September and am in remission 4) I don‘t usually but really want to keep focused on balance this year. In my work / life, in my lifestyle generally I think I have been living boom or bust for too long 5) done
