The “I Survived...” series are great books for middle schoolers who shy away from reading!

TheAromaofBooks When I was a kid I remember Mom collecting a similar series - “We Were There When...“ They were a great way to get an overview of an event, and frequently tricked us into reading more books on the topic. 😁 4y

This HF based off of the storm that hit United States Midwest completely without any notice. John finds himself trapped out in the horrible blizzard with no knowledge on how to survive. Does he make it? I think this would be a great LC for the room since Lauren Tarshis has an entire series all based on historical events that could be talked about. This activity provides detailed High Order questions that would really get conversations started..

This HF novel by Lauren Tarshis is a great experience for students to read. This book tells about events that have really happened but with a character that is made up, experiencing the events. John was a city boy and didn‘t think he was up for a bad winter, and he didn‘t know any survival tactics. Read to find out if John ever finds his way home after getting stuck in a building during the snow! #UCFLAE3414SU19

Macker11 In the classroom I would use this as a PR and allow the students to discuss these events in detail to where they can understand these real events. ESOL #5 teaching technical vocab supporting key concepts could be used to allow students to understand the vocab prior to learning the historical event. DrSpalding Be sure to check Scholastic‘s resource as well. This is an excellent series and I like the idea of partner reading. This means when you purchase these books, you will want to attempt to buy two! Sometimes they have deals for this purpose. 5y

A family moves from chicago to the Dakota territory and has to learn how to survive the harsh winters. The story focuses on one boy and his friendships and relationships with his family. It was suspenseful and my son and I both learned a lot about life on the prairies in the late 1800s.
