Middlemarch: (penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)
Middlemarch: (penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) | George Eliot
George Eliot's beloved masterpiece in a Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition with a foreword by Rebecca Mead, author of the bestselling memoir My Life in Middlemarch A triumph of realist fiction, George Eliot's Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life explores a fictional nineteenth-century Midlands town in the midst of sweeping change. The proposed Reform Bill, the new railroads, and scientific advances are threatening upheaval on every front. Against this backdrop, the quiet drama of ordinary lives is played out by the novel's complexly portrayed characters--until the arrival of two outsiders further disrupts the town's equilibrium. Every bit as powerful and perceptive in our time as it was in the Victorian era, Middlemarch displays George Eliot's clear-eyed yet humane understanding of characters caught up in the mysterious unfolding of self-knowledge. In this elegant Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition, Rebecca Mead introduces the novel that shaped her life and reflects on its joys and its timeless relevance. For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,500 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

‘Then it may be rescued and healed,‘ said Dorothea.

Since I am not a quick reader, it feels extra sweet to finish a long classic. Even better the second time around. My poor copy is destined for the trash bin after our #wellreadmom #bookclub meeting because it is in about 10 pieces by this point. ❤️

I did it! I got through the entire book! I think this was my third try and I resorted to listening to the audiobook on 1.25 speed... Yeah, it was a lot of drama and pearl clutching, so if you like that sort of weepy distress then this is the book for you! 😁 Now if I could just get through Swann's Way!

#QuotsyApr19 Day 30: #mistake in prophecies as gratuitous. I have yet to read a George Eliot novel. I think I own a copy of this book lying somewhere, gathering dust. 🤓🤣😭😂🧚🏼‍♀️💕📚

Leniverse Middlemarch is an amazing novel. But it is quite an investment of time and attention. The prose is really dense. I read it one or two chapters per day, with my morning coffee, over two months. When it was finished I was sad and wanted more. 3mo
gradcat @Leniverse I think you put it very well . . . in fact, all of her books are dense and require a great commitment. You know, I‘m just thinking . . . if you want more have you read (edited) 3mo
Leniverse @gradcat I have, yes. And Silas Marner. After Middlemarch I resolved to read one of her books per year until I‘ve read them all and then read Middlemarch again! Although I might do two this year, since it‘s the 200 anniversary of her birth. I have her Essay collection, and I‘m thinking maybe Adam Bede. 3mo

We are finally back from holiday and regular posting habits can recommence. (I know it‘s a mobile app, but I just don‘t get around to it. I need my space. 🤷🏻‍♀️)

So, Christmas #BookHaul part 1/3. These are mine. Very happy to get beautiful cloth bound editions of two of my favourite books. 😍 Also happy to receive two award winning books by Norwegian authors. I haven‘t been able to keep up with Norwegian lit at all since I moved to the UK.

6mo

A story following the lives of men and women from varying social classes during the early part of the nineteenth century, Middlemarch is a full-bodied novel of epic proportions. Insightful and perceptive with well-rounded characters and lots of wit makes this book a must read; an incredible feat for a book that was written nearly 150 years ago and testament to Eliot‘s superb writing. #GirlCrush ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After 146 issues, one a morning, I finally finished this one. It's the longest #serialreader book I've done yet. On to the next one. I'm thinking Dostoevsky's The Idiot because I haven't read it yet (gasp) and it's exactly 💯 issues.
